NORFOLK
A man pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter in the 2007 stabbing death of a fellow Norfolk State University student who died near a dormitory entrance.
Terrance Allen Ross, 20, pleaded guilty in connection with the death of Sean Williams, 18, of Newport News. It happened during an altercation that began, according to a court document, over a disputed marijuana deal.
Despite a prosecutor's objection, Ross will be allowed to remain free on bond pending a sentencing hearing scheduled for Oct. 10, said commonwealth's attorney's office spokeswoman Amanda Howie. Later that month, he is scheduled for a bench trial on malicious wounding and marijuana charges linked to the same incident, she said.
A court document gives this version of events:
Ross sold Williams and another man, Sherrod Allen, some marijuana for $20. Williams gave Ross $100, and Williams and Allen got angry with Ross when he did not promptly give them change.
Though Ross finally returned the change, he and Allen began to fight. Ross stabbed Allen in the stomach, then Williams got involved in the fight.
At some point, a witness reported seeing Ross strike Williams, though she did not see a knife in Ross' hand. About a second later, Williams fell near the entrance of a dormitory, where he died.
Police later found Williams' blood on Ross' clothing. Ross acknowledged being in the altercation, but denied having a knife. Authorities never found the knife.
