McCain's character blot

John McCain owns seven houses today because 28 years ago he was smart enough to dump his first wife, Carol, and their three kids for his trophy wife, Cindy, the daughter of a multimillionaire. McCain left Carol and the kids behind on the East Coast while he and Cindy moved to Arizona where his rich father-in-law bankrolled McCain's run for Congress (and later the Senate). That might be the stuff that a 'war hero' is made of, but it is not what I want in a president.

Steve..

The fact that McCain owns a bunch of homes is not the real point for many. It is the fact that he and the GOP have tried to paint Obama as an elitist out of touch with Americans. That is chutzpuh at its worst. Don't claim someone else is something that you are even more of yourself. Obama's (both of them) and Biden's backgrounds are much more aligned with ordinary folk than McCain's ever was. His VP pick is in line Obama and Biden in this area, so kudos there. If you remember the GOP also vicously attacked Kerry as an elitist for being so wealthy and having a super rich wife. In fairness it should cut both ways don't you think? For some reason though it has not stuck to McCain as it did Kerry-must be that liberal press at work. Oh yea, if that were the case it would be the other way around. Politics is all about perception and both sides work the refs to make things seem as they are not.

What qualifies?

Being shot down years ago certainly doesn’t automatically qualify someone for president – neither does being a community organizer and a first term senator who professes to understand the “common” people. Per the Constitution, the only qualification is that you must be 35 and born in the USA.

Who cares how many homes the McCain’s own especially since the majority of the money is his wife’s? Isn’t wealth a sign of making the most of your opportunities? Why do Obama and Biden both say that if you work hard enough, you can do anything you want in America yet then promise unending giveaways that do anything but promote hard work? Doesn’t anyone notice this?

The fact of the matter is that these politicians are not typical people living typical lives despite what they are trying to sell us. How many of us middle class people own million dollar homes or have attended Princeton or Harvard? These polit

What matters

McCain's service deserves our respect and gratitude.

But I have never understood how getting shot down and captured qualifies you to be president of the United States.

McCain's wealth and lifestyle have caused him to be out-of-touch with the lives of everyday Americans. That he stayed at the Hanoi Hilton 30 years ago is irrelevant to that issue.

McCain owns so many homes he can't remember them all. Voters trying to pay a mortgage on one home should consider that when they go to the polls.

Poor Mccain

He tries so hard.

I wonder if anybody as actually sat him down and explained to him that people in hell will be sipping slushies long before he becomes president.

I am the worst nightmare of

I am the worst nightmare of all you insecure, white males. I am 60, white, and voted for Bush in 2000 (my bad!) I will never vote Republican again. I am now actively campaigning for Obama and against McCain.

Bush and Cheney are the worst, most corrupt ever, and McCain agreed with them 90% of the time.

McCain never would have been accepted to, nor graduated from, the Naval Academy if his father and grandfather were not admirals. He was of average intelligence, at best, and broke school rules in high school. He was nearly kicked out of the USNA for failing grades and bad behavior but the admirals prevailed, and McCain "graduated". Captain McCain retired in 1981, one month after his admiral father died. No surprise.

McCain the "war hero" returned from Vietnam and cheated on his Navy wife with numerous women before landing his trophy wife Cindy.

McCain become a good friend with Charles Keating and tried to influence federal regulators investigating Keating for the savings and loan scandal that cost US taxpayers nearly $3 billion. Before the scandal broke, Keating gave over $100,000 to McCain's campaign, paid for 9 McCain family vacations to the Bahamas, and allowed Cind

The age of attacks

Unfortunately, it is the age of attack the person -- win at all costs. The attitude that Bill Clinton, a two term president, is a bad choice for a speaker, sums it all up. It shows the arrogance and the ignorance of society. It's quite sad actually. On one side, you have a candidate who is unable to tell you how many homes he owns, has a distorted sense of wealth and the middle class and has no idea about this "economy stuff" (but he will read Greenspan's book to brush up), attacks his candidate for having political aspirations (which is odd, because he admitted as such in a book a couple of years ago), and changes his positions to match those of the current administration (and even has the gall to act as if he is working to solve the crisis in Georgia). On the other, you have a candidate that hangs out with known terrorists (really? If you don't recall, that same charge was leveled against McCain, by Corsi), is unamerican and hung out with a bad pastor, even though McCain did as well. God forbid we have a campaign on the issues. I can't wait for the debates...

Character counts

I'm glad to see you put so much emphasis on character. The dems must be coming around, too. They cancelled John Edward's speech because he tried to cover up an affair with another woman. Then they put Bill Clinton in his place. Good choice.

Jim King

You're Right Petey....

I want some who hangs out with "Preachers" saying we deserved to get bombed and attacked. Heck, he even be "friends" with a convicted terrorist...shhh, don't tell anyone. He'll send mass emails to his loons and have them disrupt a radi program.

Shocking!

Everything your candidate does is forgivable, but nothing the other guy does is. McCain's ex-wife is supporting him, but Edwards' wife forgiving him isn't enough. When you represent the party of righteous indignation, you should be expected to meet the standards you purport to espouse.

The writer's point that McCain isn't exactly what his perception management team wants you to keep believing is quite valid. And to think I voted for him in the 2000 primary. Fortunately, I've been paying attention to deeds rather than words since.

Disagreement

Gee it sure seems like this letter writer has more problems with McCain's divorce than does the woman he divorced, considering she is supporting him in his run for POTUS.

Al, when you're talking

Al, when you're talking politics, you're talking making deals, compromises, brokering agreements, giving up something to get something, none of which is clean and pure as the driven snow. Everyone has their own set of morals which rise and fall with the circumstances at hand. The only thing about McCain is that he has been around in public life for several years and we can see what he has done as a politician. This may give us some idea of what we may expect in the future. With Obama we have limited experience we can look at to judge what we could expect and can only hope that he can pull of some of the things he promises. While John McCain's personal life may not be the traditional life that some religions prefer, we are talking about hiring him to run our country, not to be an example of marriage perfection for which he may be a good example of a bad example.

Marrying a Beer Heiress

Marrying a Beer Heiress 17 years your junior IS hard work. Heck, just FINDING a rich unmarried beer heiress is close to impossible. So ease up of the home owner of 4, or 7, or 10, or 12 homes. As VP-shortlister Mitt Romney stated yesterday, John earned those homes when he married Cindy, who happens to own all the homes that John earned.

Pete

Step down off your high and mighty pedistal, Place the pitcher of the Messiah koolaid down and stop blaming somone when you do not know all the facts. I am willing to bet that you are one of the people who believed that William jefferson Clinton did nothing wrong and never had sex with that woman Monica lewinski or that Hillary never had any possible witness threatened(proven or not we know it happened).I had much rather support a man who divorced his first wife 20 plus yrs ago then went to the congress and has become successful there ever since over a man who sits in a church for 20 plus yrs listening to hate filled messages from his pastor and denies ever hearing anything wrong. I also have a problem with a man whose campain for state senate is financed and run by a person who helped bomb our capital and then said he did not do enough. Your canidate is not speaky clean so watch throwing rocks in the glass h

Not In Today's Political Reality

Don't be so sure, Mary, he was known to hang out with a bad crowd including prostitutes and expressed pinko sentiments regarding the redistribution of wealth. He also had an unAmercan, Middle-Eastern sounding name, a brown hue and a history of violent activism.

Divorce

I believe divorce is always a tragedy and I know Mr. McCain calls his divorce one the greatest regrets of his life.
However, it was after he was released as a POW, almost 40 years ago. If we are going back 40 years on every candidate, only Jesus Christ Himself would be able to run without reproach! Cheers, MGM

No double standard here...

Divorce disqualifies you from the presidency but extra-marital affairs don't?

Seriously, is that the best you can come up with??
