Three children, ages 2, 5 and 7, were taken to hospitals this morning after fire broke out last night inside their apartment on Old Dominion Circle.

The fire was reported shortly before midnight at North Jefferson Square Apartments, said Capt. Bob Neil, of Newport News Fire Department.

A resident rescued one of the children, while a police officer rescued a second child and a firefighter rescued the third, Neil said. The children suffered burns and smoke inhalation.  Their conditions were unknown this morning.

The fire was under control quickly and the cause was under investigation this morning, Neil said.

The mother of the three children was outside the apartment when the fire started, Neil said.

The apartment was heavily damaged, he said.
