No decision made on new ODU president

After 2-1/2 hours behind closed doors Thursday, the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors adjourned with long faces but no decision on a new president and no immediate plans to meet again soon.

Two people with knowledge of the deliberations said the board is hung up - split between two finalists - but no consensus has emerged for either, or whether to continue and expand the search.

There were no public statements before or after Thursday's private session. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board is Sept. 19.

The finalists are Deborah Stanley, president of State University of New York, Oswego; and Richard Davenport, president of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

They're in the running to succeed former ODU president Roseann Runte, who left in June to accept a similar position at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Her chief of staff and vice president for institutional advancement and admissions, John R. Broderick, is serving as acting president.

Earlier this week, leaders of the ODU Faculty Senate who interviewed the finalists announced that they didn't feel either finalist was a good fit for the university and urged that the search be continued.
