Norfolk council to discuss site of skateboard park

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

The location of a skateboard park will be one of the issues the City Council takes up today at noon at City Hall when it ends its month-long summer break.

The day begins with a 2 1/2-hour informal work session, to be followed by a 2:30 p.m. formal meeting.

Darrell Crittendon, who heads the city's recreation and open space department, will make a presentation in the informal session on a skateboard park. Crittendon has said he will recommend the park be built downtown adjacent to Harbor Park. However, most council members have said they want the $750,000 facility built at Northside Park.

Crittendon will go along with whatever site council recommends.

Among the more than 20 items to be voted upon in the formal session is a proposal to raise fees that companies can charge for towing vehicles at the city's request.

BVB

Obviously you know nothing on the subject. If you went to one of VB's 2 skate parks you would see many people there, all times of day, all times of year. And it has been that way since the first park opened 6 years ago. That money has been well spent, even the money that was needed to repair Trashmore after the fire. I would bet good money that if VB researched its most used Parks and Rec attributes the skate parks would be top on the list.

norfolk needs tourist $$$'s

I don't think some of you are aware how popular this sport is, and the major events held in other cities. Norfolk, needs tourist dollars, and can't count on the 10 people a year that visit the MacArthur Memorial or the Wisconsin. The city has all these grand idea's about downtown hotels, but what for? Who wants to visit Norfolk, so they can sit in a hotel room?

waste of concrete

Make sure you put it next to a public facility,YMCA,ZOO,Harbor Park, etc. The benefit of such a move would be appreciated by those that want to go swimming at the public pool it will become after it becomes a haven for delinquents. We wouldn't want it to become a complete waste of concrete. Will we use the gum picker-upper and the doggie poop containers at this facility,as that would be a must?

How about Town Point Park?

Skateboarding is becoming a spectator sport. In the right location it could bring Norfolk.......tourist dollars! Lord knows they sure need it.

Put it under 264 near harbor

Put it under 264 near harbor park.

Northside Park is ideal

This location draws so many patrons from everywhere in the city. there's swimming pools, tennis courts, b-ball courts, baseball fields etc. very appropriate to place the skakeboard park where many many have easy and inexpensive access.
Parking enforcement Tow trucks charge too much already, and the damage they cause to the vehicles is over the top and they aren't libel for any of it. so let's re-think the whole park enforcement tow truck legislation for Norfolk. Reset the bond amount for the tow company, increase liability insurance and then make them pay for the privlege of towing in norfolk, and put in place an exception to dis-abled driver tows, the maximum they should charge is $65. to tow the disabled car to a garage or the motorist home. I suggest to everyone to get emergency tow insurance like offered by triple A, AAA, pays for itself when you need road assistance.

Let's get this done...

At 28 I only have a few more good years to skate before the arthritis sets in.

Ugh

First, it would have more style if the dollar amount was 720 instead of 750.
Second, do not raise fees that the towing companies can charge. They are a trash industry, pay them low.

Light rail............

Skateboarders have to get to the park so would it not make sense to put the park near a light rail stop? Harbor Park!
You people on City council who wanted this pet project better start finding ways of getting riders.

Northside park

The only problem, there is no HRT bus service to that end of Tidewater Drive.
