Detectives are examining evidence from a minivan that was involved in a shootout with a Norfolk sheriff’s deputy, court papers said.

Someone shot from the van at a uniformed deputy on Aug. 20.

The shooting happened at 10:35 p.m. at 1320 Longdale Drive, off North Military Highway, according to a search warrant filed Friday in Norfolk Circuit Court. A uniformed deputy was talking to a group of people when someone inside a burgundy vehicle drove by and shot at them, the search warrant said.

The deputy fired back at the vehicle, which sped off. The shooting first came to light in the search warrant. Norfolk police, the agency investigating, did not report it to the public when it happened.

According to the warrant:

A citizen called the sheriff’s office on Monday to report that a vehicle fitting the description was parked at Mariner’s Watch apartments. There was a bullet hole in the driver’s side, and the vehicle matched the one involved in the shooting.

It is a Mazda5 minivan owned by Hertz. Police examined it on Thursday for fingerprints and other evidence, and found a bullet in the driver’s side window frame.

Police have not made any arrests, said Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman.
