NORFOLK
The School Board on Wednesday voted to gradually increase school meal prices over the next three years to pay for salaries and rising food costs.
Starting this fall, lunch prices will go up by 25 cents from last year, costing $1.35 for elementary students and $1.50 for middle and high school students. Breakfast will cost 70 cents, an increase of 10 cents.
By the 2010-11 school year, lunch prices will rise a total of 50 cents, to $1.60 for elementary students and $1.75 at the middle and high school level. Breakfast will cost 90 cents, a total increase of 30 cents.
The plan will bring Norfolk's prices up to current state averages. It ultimately will boost school revenues by about $677,000 a year, according to an efficiency study by MGT of America, a management research and consulting firm.

a bargain
Considering the cost of groceries, school lunch prices are a bargain. Postings from another article on school lunches indicated parents who were extremely unhappy with the apparently horrid meals their children were getting. Where is it a guarantee that little Johnny or Susan should get a gourmet meal at school? It's SCHOOL - not a 4 star restaurant! If I were such an unhappy parent and worried my child was eating terrible tasting food I'd make sure I made his/her lunch every day. There's nothing wrong with taking lunch from home...but I guess there's a lot of lazy parents who would never bother. It's just easier to complain about shortcomings from someone or somewhere else.
Lunch Cost
I totally agree that we should help suppliment the increase in food cost at the schools. So I do not mind payin 1.50-1.75 for my kids to get a healthy lunch and enough to eat. However, I do have a problem with them saying they will use some of the money to pay for additional staff. I already pay state and local takes for that. I too would like to see how much money the schools receive for the free lunch programs and for each military child that is in that school. Because they reeive that on top of my takes that I pay.
Brown bag it
When I was in elementary school, I carried my lunch every day. Did I always enjoy Mom's tomato sandwiches on white bread? Nooooo, I didn't, but money was tight and we did the best we could. I learned a lot from those days, and there is nothing wrong with taking your lunch to school. There is also nothing wrong with the price increase we are hearing about.
True Cost??
I see that the school board did not say just how much they collected from the feds for the free lunch and breakfast programs. I guess that they may not want you to see that fact. I do however agree the with all coast going up that there has to be a hick in the cost of lunches.
