CHESAPEAKE
Sen. Barack Obama is bringing his presidential campaign to Oscar Smith High School for a town hall meeting Thursday evening, his campaign confirmed Tuesday.
The Chesapeake visit is one of four campaign stops in Virginia cities over the next two days, less than a week before Monday's start of the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
As the convention draws near, Obama is expected to soon make known his choice for a vice presidential running mate. Among those mentioned is Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
In response to questions about Kaine's vice presidential prospects and the rallies in Virginia, Charlie Kelly, director of Kaine's political action committee, Moving Virginia Forward, issued a written statement.
"It's great news that Sen. Obama plans to campaign in Virginia on Wednesday and Thursday," Kelly wrote. "Gov. Kaine is committed to tackling the tough challenges facing Virginia's families and knows that Sen. Obama will be a results-oriented partner when elected president."
Obama will be joined by Kaine for an invitation-only town hall meeting Thursday morning in Chester, south of Richmond. The Illinois senator is scheduled to be in Virginia today for town hall meetings in Martinsville and Lynchburg.
Del. Lionell Spruill Sr., D-Chesapeake, who had previously supported New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the presidency, said Tuesday he was asked by the Obama campaign to help receive the candidate when he visits Chesapeake.
"My job is to work as hard for him as I did for her," said Spruill, who said that he hopes Obama picks Clinton to run for vice president. Spruill is a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention.
The Chesapeake meeting is open to the public, but a ticket is required for admission. Tickets are being distributed at five Obama campaign offices starting at 9 a.m. today.
The offices are at 123 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake; 140 W. Washington Road, Suffolk; 645 Church St., Norfolk; 2601 London Blvd., Portsmouth; and 3613 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach.
At today's meeting in Martinsville, he will be joined by former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a candidate for U.S. Senate. Warner, who is running against former Gov. Jim Gilmore for the Senate post, is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the national convention.
Tonight in Lynchburg, Obama will conduct a town meeting with U.S. Sen. Jim Webb.
As Obama's plans to campaign in Virginia today and Thursday fueled speculation that Kaine might become his running mate, two prominent Virginia Republicans in Congress acknowledged that the governor's addition to the
ticket would strengthen Democratic prospects in Virginia this fall.
Kaine "has been quite an effective governor in many areas," said Sen. John W. Warner.
"Tim Kaine is obviously a very able governor" and "would be of some help to Obama in Virginia," said Rep. Tom Davis, R-11th District.
Democrats have not carried Virginia for president since 1964, but Obama has signaled that he plans an all-out push for the state's 13 electoral votes.
John Warner suggested that Kaine would be of little help in burnishing Obama's reputation on national security and military matters, two areas in which polls suggest the voters are less comfortable with the Democrat than with his Republican counterpart, Arizona Sen. John McCain.
While McCain was a Navy pilot and admiral's son who gained national prominence as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam in the 1970s, Obama did not serve in the military.
His lack of military experience has led many observers to suggest Obama could choose a running mate with strong foreign policy credentials, such as Delaware Sen. Joe Biden or New Mexico Gov. and former U.N. Ambassador Bill Richardson.

It is comon knowledge that sunni terorists sought harbor within Iraq. In additon, he paid suicide bombers families who would bomb Israeli's. This was an open ad to terrorists.
Ira
A couple of things. Please tell me how Saddam was harboring terrorists since that assertion was proved false years ago. And yes, McCain can be linked to Bush in this respect by McCain's own statements and positions. Go back and read/listen to McCain on the subject of Iraq, from 2002 to present and you will see what I mean.
Pros and Cons
Look guys, going into Iraq at first was smart. We had a dictator w/ massive financial backing via oil snubbing us and the UN. He was paying and harboring terrorists. He at the very least had a working grasp of how to use WMD's. We did siphon terrorists into Iraq and effectively bring the fight to them.
The down side is when we uncover arm depots and leave them unguarded and act suprised they are missing. Then they are used to blow up our own people.
Yes, the war has been mismanaged and aimless. You cannot link McCain to Bush over this issue. Just because we could not garner support from the UN and many allies does not make it wrong. Regardless of mistakes, at this ppoint, we cannot allow Iran to grow. I think this is obvious if you were old enough to read in 1979.
yes, we are there now
That was mistake number 1. The second mistake is there was no exit strategy. If we had gone after Bin Laden, the cause of the 9/11 attack I would have supported that war, I do not support the Iraq war. Please don't tell me I don't support our troops, becuase I do. It's not their faullt they were sent to the wrong place.
never said mine was more valid
Not telling you for whom you should vote, nor am I saying that my opinion is any more valid than anyone else's. Was only trying to say mine is more informed within the very specific area of recent ground truth in Iraq. There are obviously an abundance of areas to consider when selecting a President; where Iraq fits into your particular hierarchy of subjects is entirely up to you. Consult Maslow, I suppose. It is important to me on the personal level because as long as we are engaged in Iraq I am on the hook to go back. It is also important to me on the macro level because I believe getting it right in Iraq has repercussions for both our national security and of the future of the Middle East as a whole, the latter being my professional specialty. Leaving Iraq in chaos has implications for the wider Middle East that is attractive for no one in the West and few in the region. Whether we should have gone into Iraq is now an academic question. The reality is that we are there now and have to find the best way out of a bad situation.
IRA, not attacking you...
Just pointing out that the start of the mess began with wage freezing. The start of dependance on Companies to provide Health Insurance starts with FDR and his executive order at WWII.
I am totally in agreement that Litigation has not made anything better but my comment is not absurd. Had it not been for that Executive Order that Froze wages I do not think we would be in the current position that we are in.
Now I also know that it's been 60 some years since that started but that was where the onus of expecting Health Benefits from an employer began.
But you are right, litigation with multi-million dollar settlements for some of the most inane things has not helped (and yes, I know there are exceptions to this)...
I don't care who has been to iraq
When it comes to electing a politician I don't care who has served in our military, been to Iraq or fought in the war of 1812. You opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.
seeya
Green Lantern. That's great. Glad to see you boys still read comic books.
Since this is about one posting away from "I know you are but what am I" and has gotten WAY off topic, I'm out.
One more thing Green Lantern.....
You make personal attack after personal attack. Then when given a taste of your own medicine, you whimper like a puppy. Man up, dude!
I notice
I noticed you did not mention the attacks on McCain that are originating from Obama's campaign. Some right here on these boards. I assume you are ok w/ the ad released about McCain not knowing how many homes he has? It's not even relevent.
On a side note, has anyone noticed that many critics of Obama are being heavily censored? I personally had a post removed that didn't even graze the terms. On one article about his visit all of the posts have been removed.
The green lantern strikes again!
You have no special vision that cannot be countered by people that have experienced what you claim to have experienced. Many trained military professionals disagree with your assessment on the ground as well as from a less myopic point of view.
It's obvious you were not an officer or in military intelligence.
I guess you missed the ethnic cleansing perpetuated by the Shiites on the Sunnis. US forces were duped into protecting these Shiite forces. Were you there then? Do you even know about these events. If you were so omnipresent how did you miss that as well as a myriad of foul ups.
140,000 US troops still in Iraq (your numbers). That's a long way from mission accomplished.
Sen. McSame and his lemmings
In recent weeks, Sen. McSame has lied about Obama being responsible for gas prices; Obama’s treatment of wounded U.S. troops in Germany; and Obama’s tax policies. (Check it out at factcheck.org)
His lemming-like followers have taken up the chant.
To that, I will offer this observation from Newsweek's (yes, yes, I know, the evil, mainstream media, blah, blah blah) Jonathan Alter:
When he resorts to these kinds of falsehoods, and casts such aspersions on his opponent’s patriotism, John McCain is no longer putting his country first. If he were, he would recognize that the interests of the nation require a relatively truthful campaign. To fulfill his image of himself, McCain should stop lying about his opponent. For a man with his claims to honor and integrity, that’s not too much to ask.
thanks
Lores, thanks for your comment. It means a lot.
The Obama train wreck
The Obama plan --Inflating your tires, getting a tune up, putting up wind mills will not decrease gas prices. It will take 10 years or more to drill for new oil but yet using alternative fuels won't (it will take longer). Taxing the America people, tacking stiff taxes to big oil companies and ending tax breaks for U.S. companies that take jobs overseas, (I hope he don't tell John Kerry's wife about that one) From the Pilot --Obama called for expanded national service programs to allow people to defray college tuitions. He promised improved health care for those who have it, and for those who don't, he said, "I'm going to see that you have the same health insurance that we have as members of Congress."
But Obama offered no blueprint of how he would pay for the programs. "None of this is going to be easy," he acknowledged.
More from the pilot: It gets better He said illegal immigrants should be regist
Jellybeans, anyone?
After reading thru this lengthy discussion of who is / has the biggest weenie (Obama or McCain), I’ve come to the conclusion that the Easter Bunny is looking better and better…
CS Thanks for your service.

Thanks for your service. Ignore those whose opinions will never change and come here just to flame.
Talking Points for Obama
What Americans need is to get off purchasing foreign oil asap and start drilling for new oil along with using all their own new sources of energy now. Because Every 1 year of delay in drilling for USA oil=10 more years dependency on foreign oil, which =20 more years of fighting foreign radical Islamic terrorists paid for by our continued purchase of $700 billion per year in foreign oil.....Keep smiling....

Now you're just being puerile.

Explain to me one time where I made up some . You can't. Liberals bemoan how horrible it is that "the troops" keep going back to Iraq, then when someone like me points out that I have several tours in Iraq you say it isn't credible. Why? Because I say the surge worked? You attack my credibility only because I offer an opinion that doesn't jive with your vision of reality, based solely on what you read or see in the media. I bet if I had said, "Hey, I was just in Iraq and the surge was a disaster" you'd be the FIRST person to say - "SEE!! Even the TROOPS say it was a failure, and they'd know!" An awful lot of us believe in what we're doing over there. That's one of the reasons the reenlistment rate is so high in Iraq. You accuse me and others of personal attacks, yet you do the same to me. If I got into detail I could get in trouble and you wouldn't believe me any way. There really isn't anything I could say to convince you
George
My guess is that he's actually the Green Lantern on a secret mission for The Justice League.
RORLOL
TAX TAX TAX !!
#1 reason he will lose. How does taxing corporations to death help with employment? Perhaps they will all do as Intel did and move operations overseas to countries like Israel who offer it's workers the same as here in the USA but tax the companies that employ them less.
SOCIALISM = EUROPES FAILURES, is this what you want?
mike
First, Gertz. If you are sick of hearing about the election you may want to check out this link. I don't think it is McCain shoving it down your throat:

Mikelong, your correlation of our current woes to FDR are absurd. OUr insuranc esystem has reinvented itself many times over since FDR's day. If you want to correlate goverment action to the mess then check the date when lawyers began legally advertising, that means pursuing litigants. It sounds like you care so check it out. Know the real cause:

Do you think you can make up any BS you want to without validation or impunity? You are just not credible.
I cannot tell you of my service experience as I am bound to secrecy for national security reasons. What a great dodge, thanks.
ummm... I meant FDR...
When he froze wages he made it illegal for any company to offer a higher salary to a perspective employee from another company. So what did employers do who were hurting for workers? They started to offer them benefits like Health Insurance since they could not offer them a higher salary...
Hey IRA, FRD is the reason we are...
...in this Medical Insurance Mess to begin with. He was a good Pres but his freezing of wages during WWII started the whole mess with the high cost of Medical Insurance.
Talk about the law of unintended consequences...
NObama voters
Barack Obama may have secured the Democratic nomination for president, but I don't think he will ever see the inside of the White House except as a visitor.
He has two things going against him. He's African-American, and he's way too liberal for most Americans. Barring a gargantuan blunder by the Republican candidate, John McCain, those two factors will put Obama on the short end of the vote count.
Race is a factor in America, though no one is going to admit to being prejudiced to a pollster or a journalist. Nevertheless, I believe there remains a substantial number of people who simply will not vote to put an African-American in the White House.
Most of the people you see at these rallies are there for one reason, his race. They are not there to be pursuaded to vote for him, thier minds are already made up and he's preaching to the choir. If he was all that he's being hyped to be he wouldn't need to lim
I must be naive
Ira, I think people out there are listening, but I must be naive to think they are "listening" to this blog, and will make their voting decision based on what I've been reading here. The rants go on and on, sometimes to the point of senseless. If they are listening to the News Media, God Help them, and us. As a voter, i'm sick of listening to the Media coverage of this election. I'm sick of listening to Obama, and I'm sick of McCain, and I think many voters feel the same. In all my voting years I have never been so disgusted. The primary voting that gave the nomination to Obama and McCain, is one of the biggest mistakes in history, and totally Media generated. That's my opinion!
FDR
"As far as changing anyone's mind on who they will vote for.....well, if that was your objective, then you were in the wrong place. It ain't going to hppen"
I disagree. I believe there are people out there listening. There are some very sharp people who post at this site. While there are some who just have sensless rants many are articulate. It's an important subject which is difficult to discuss in person. Boards like this will serve an important purpose in future democracy.
BTW, FDR was not only a dem he instigated our entry into WW2. He wanted the fight. The country didn't. Sadly we are still defacto fighting it in Iraq.
Obama grew up in Hawaii and visited family
last week-including his aging grandmother.
not alive during the 60s
Sorry, Gertz. I wasn't around in the 60s but the guys in my unit say it all the time.
I haven't seen my kids much because I have spent more time overseas than at home since 9/11.
I didn't mean I was trying to convince people for whom they should vote. There are plenty of subjects about which I don't know too much, but I know a lot more about the Army and the war in Iraq than most people who post here do. My intent was to offer a first-hand perspective on Iraq, but people would rather attack my credibility than listen to anything that contradicts Democratic talking points. Whatever. Ignorance is bliss and it votes.
