ODU Football: Meet the Coaches

Bobby Wilder

Head coach
Prior to his arrival at ODU, Wilder was on the Maine coaching staff for 17 years. In 2000 he was promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Maine, and a year later was named associate head coach. Wilder was the quarterbacks coach at Maine before taking over as offensive coordinator. He was an All-New England quarterback and captained the Black Bears to the Yankee Conference championship his senior season. Wilder ranks sixth on Maine’s career passing list. Of the five ahead of him, Wilder played with one of them and coached the other four. After graduating from Maine, Wilder began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Jack Bicknell at Boston College. Wilder and his wife, Pam, live in Norfolk with their sons, Derek, 12, and Drew, 8.

Chip West

Assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Prior to coming to ODU, West coached the defensive backs at James Madison, which won a national title during his tenure there. Prior to that, the Hampton native was at Fordham in 2003 and also coached defensive backs there. He was a wide receivers coach at Colgate for four years and before that served as a graduate assistant coach at West Virginia. West, who played at Kecoughtan High, was an All-CIAA wide receiver at Division II Livingstone. He has a son, Justin, 16, and daughter, Jada, 13.

Brian Scott

Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach A standout quarterback at Maine, Scott has served as recruiting coordinator, offensive line coach, running backs coach, and tight ends coach at Maine since 2003. He also coached at Tennessee-Martin and at Massachusetts-Lowell, a Division II school, and coached at Cony High in Augusta, Maine.

Andy Rondeau

Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Rondeau has coached at Maine, Buffalo, Tennessee-Martin, North Dakota State, Pitt and Northeastern. A graduate of Syracuse, Rondeau worked there as a student assistant. At Maine, he was in charge of defensive backs and was special teams coordinator. Rondeau and his wife Tiffany have a son, Ryan, 4, and daughters Allison, 2, and Kyle, 1.

Michael Zyskowski

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Coached running backs and was special teams coordinator at Maine for three years prior to coming to ODU. Zyskowski played fullback at Maine and also served as a student-assistant coach on the Maine baseball team in 2005 when the Black Bears won the America East tournament title. He has a daughter, Marley, 2.

Dealton Cotton

Defensive line coach A Norfolk native who starred at Granby High and East Carolina, Cotton comes to ODU after four years as head coach at nearby Maury High. He was also head coach at Hertford (N.C.) County High. While at East Carolina, the Pirates went to the Peach Bowl and the Liberty Bowl. Cotton holds three degrees from ECU: a bachelor’s in criminal justice, and a bachelor’s and master’s in social work.

Ron Whitcomb

Quarterbacks coach A four-year starter at quarterback at Maine, Whitcomb left as the Black Bears’ all-time leader in completions (755), total offense (8,801) and TD passes (68). Whitcomb was also the rookie of the year in the Atlantic-10. He was the 2006-07 Atlantic-10 student of the year and earned a bachelor’s degree in European history. Whitcomb operated at Maine in the spread offensive set, which ODU will employ.

Zohn Burden

Defensive backs coach A native of Virginia Beach, Burden starred at Salem High and VMI, where he finished his career as the Big South’s all-time leader in receptions (162) and receiving yards (2,111). He was a three-time all-conference selection and holds the school record for consecutive games with a reception with 34. Prior to coming to ODU, Burden was defensive backs and wide receivers coach at Fork Union Military Academy.

Keita Malloy

Wide receivers and tight ends coach Prior to ODU, Malloy was a wide receivers coach at Trinity College and a tight ends and running backs coach at Fordham. He also served as an assistant coach at West Georgia State, Lafayette College and Washburn University. Malloy was one of the last of a dying breed at Delaware, playing as a two-way starter at receiver and defensive back. He also played professionally in the Arena Football League from 1994 to 1996.
