CHESAPEAKE
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the person who threw a kitten from a moving car in Chesapeake.
The 6-week-old kitten suffered multiple broken bones and road rash after it was tossed from a vehicle onto the pavement of the U.S. 168 bypass Thursday. It underwent surgery Friday at Mount Pleasant Veterinary Clinic in Chesapeake, said Vicky Banta, wife of Dr. David Banta, who is caring for the kitten.
The gray-and-white domestic shorthair kitten suffered a broken pelvis and two breaks on a rear leg, Banta said.
Michele Laney of Moyock, N.C., said she was northbound on the bypass between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. when she noticed something thrown from a moving vehicle a couple of cars ahead of her.
"It just looked like a gray lump that hit the pavement," Laney said. "B ut when it started crawling to the side of the road, I knew it was an animal."
The kitten had been tossed on the bypass where it crosses over the Albe marle and Chesapeake Canal. It's a difficult area to access by foot because of the narrow shoulder between the road and Jersey barriers.
"In hindsight, I'm thinking I could have been killed," Laney said. "But I wasn't even thinking about that. I couldn't fathom leaving that little baby out there if he could be saved."
Laney did not get a good look at the vehicle or driver. She hopes other motorists during the morning commute might have some information.
News of the kitten's plight has generated an outpouring of donations from the public for its medical bill, which is expected to be about $2,000 to $3,000, Banta said. Contributions have exceeded what is needed for the kitten's care.
Martin Mersereau, PETA's director of emergency response, said the reward money is for anyone who can help bring to justice the person he called a "coward."
The kitten was doing fine Friday afternoon after surgery, Laney said. She plans to visit it today at the clinic.
"I'm almost positive I'll wind up keeping him," she said. "I've already grown attached to him."

Confused?
So peta has a problem with someone tossing a cat from a car, but they are ok with peta employees tossing animals into a dumpster?
Contributions
I think anything above the cost of care should go to the local ASPCA.
Mount Pleasant Vet
Trooper is doing great!!! Thank you to all of you for your prayers, thoughts and support of this dear little kitten!! We are amazed how this community has responded to this horrible crime. Every one of you have shown us the truely loving compassionate people we thankfully still have in this world!!!!On a personal note some things happen to our family that really made me question and trust people, but after going through this experience with this precious kitten we have seen the BEST of people. As I said he is doing great!!! he is eating, purrs constantly, and he is able to support himself now that he has had surgery. We hope to continue to monitor hs recovery as he continues to heal and grow into a wonderful companion I'm sure. Once again thank you to all that responded to this terrible crime from around the world. I pray we can put a stop to the hate and violence we see in this world to man and animals. With great regard and respect, The Staff of Mount Pleasant Veterinary Clinic
Actually winsliad...
Re-read my post... I said "IF" you believe, I made no mention that you "DID" believe.
I also never said that "You" raised them to SaviorShip Status, I said "To" raise them to "Saviorship" status.
So the only thing I got wrong was that PETA was paying for the surgery.
And again, the only thing I am pointing out is that PETA doing something good but totally out of context with their beliefs. And I only made mention to you what I did because, in PETAs mind, this kitten has no purpose in anyone's home and no purpose to give love and receive love or companionship.
Amazing
Amazing that there are such hateful people in the world who could do this to a harmless kitten. My sincere gratitude goes out to Michele Laney for rescuing this little guy. I would have done the same thing!! I will be going to the clinic to leave a little something for Michele and baby 168. May blessings be with you both!!
What irony!
Rather than feel sorry for those who would give donations to innocent children with little hope to live otherwise instead of a cat with a broken pelvis, I pity the person who refuses to help his fellow man because there are just too many of us. I suppose if you owned a few cats who clawed up your drapes youd think twice about those wildlife fund donations?
There is no doubt that what this person did is sick but honestly, it's just a kitten. Of course, anybody with a heart would pick the dear thing up from the road, but the $3000+ sent by absolute strangers to heal that animal is both inspiring and ridiculous. If an impovished young student at my school was cruelly beaten and left for dead at the side of the road, would any one of you send any retribution for his suffering and hospital bills? It's nice to see our race act like, well, human beings, but can't we learn to choose our battles a little more wisely?
Catch the garbage
Catch the living pieces of garbage that did this and get them off the streets: if they're doing this to a defenseless kitten, heaven knows what they'll do to a person or heaven forbid - a child.

I'm not sure if you were referring to my 2 comments (Winsaid is close but not quite). If you are, then you didn't read what I said. I said for the first time I appreciate what PETA has done. I didn't say I believe in PETA and I don't believe that the majority of these commenters believe in PETA either. The common consensus seems to be surprise that for once (but maybe the only time), PETA has shown some real humanity regarding animals.
Also, read the story again. PETA is "offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the person...", NOT paying for the surgery.
Pilot, I'd like an explanation...
...as to why you waited hours to print my post only to remove it. As I recall I addressed the insensitive poster and said sarcastically "What a sweetheart you must be.", and "It's a shame I can't post what I really think of you." According to your Victorian guidelines I did nothing that went over the line. This is not the first time this has happened, either.
I'm starting to suspect one of your toadies who scour each post for some minor offense has taken a dislike to Mr. Fabulous. Enough already. I as a citizen am rightly concerned about numerous issues and unfortunately your rag is one of the few ways to express my thoughts to other locals. Now take me off your infantile monitor list and allow me to post.
Actually WINSAID...
If you believe in PETA then people have absolutely NO RIGHT to keep animals as pets. It is their belief that no one should know the companionship and love of animals. The Pres of PETA has said time and again that it is her hope for animals to be free and that no one has animals as pets. She kinda likens it to slavery.
Again, I think what this person did was horrid by tossing the kitty out a window. But to elevate PETA to some mythical saviorship status because they are paying to heal this cat and they are offering a reward to catch those responsible is asinine. In a perfect world (in PETAs view) this cat as well as all others would be left in the wild.
Besides, if the cat doesn't make it they can put it on ice in their refrigerated complex in the first floor of the building. This is where they store the dead animals before cremating them or dumping them in open dumpsters in NC.
....
Find something else worth a darn to whine about..

I bet it was a PETA employee.
Loser -
The person who threw this innocent animal from their vehicle deserves the same fate. My family has had cats since 1985, when we adopted our first kitten, (Who was found at 6 weeks old thrown outside in the CT winter). Since then our family has adopted 8 cats over the years. From the SPCA, from people who were transferred overseas, unwanted kittens, and another thrown away by an owner who probably moved without the kitten..
It makes my blood boil. Every one of these cats has been and still are, great family members.
All I ask, is that if I ever CATCH one of these losers throwing an innocent animal from a moving car, is that I get judged by a Jury of my TRUE peers.
An old adage
you can tell alot about a person's character by the way they treat the elderly and animals...
Thank you to the car that stopped...
I am not a PETA advocate however, I do support them in this case. Thank God for those that donated funds for the Vet care, and bless the heart of the driver that took the time to stop and save the kitten.
It is a horrible thing that we humans sometimes do to helpless animals. The unbelieveable part is that this happens often. I own a rescue kitten that was thrown out of a car in NC along with 2 other cats. One of the cats had to be put down due to the severity of its injuries, while the 2 smaller kittens survived with road rash, a split lip, crooked tail and a fearful disposition. We love our kitten "Hope" and are thankful for the car that stopped for her.
Always a lady
No, you get over it! Kudos to you for helping the CHKD, however do not condemn me or others for looking out for the welfare of animals. It's obvious that if it weren't for people like us, animals wouldn't have a chance considering the sad and unfortunate reality that there are people like you who apprantly do not care for animals and their plight.
poor kitty
I wish people would not be so callous. This was an innocent animal that did not deserve this. It doesn't matter if you agree with PETA's nutty tactics. I generally think they take thinds way too far, but the basic idea of respecting other creatures isn't a bad one. This person committed a felony, they should be found and punished to the fullest extent of the law. Animal abusers usually don't have a problem abusing people either.
Don't let PETA near this little Kitten they like to kill animals
I will never support PETA I personally think PETA has the worst animal abusers out there. I am not sure the little good they do will ever undo all the sick things they have done. PETA has given a bad name to all the decent people who really care for animals. When I here the name PETA it makes my skin crawl, and they have no one to blame but themselves. While the person that tossed the kitten needs to be jailed, let’s be real. How many animals could $2000 help? ALOT! Get your crap together PETA this will not change how most animal loving people feel about you. How about using the money people fork over to you to really help animals but hey that would be ethical and PETA has lost that part of their name.
Animla Abuse and The Kitten
To the posters of this article who feel "it's just a cat" it is obvious that you do not have souls. Last week in the state of Delaware three children all age 9 set a kitten on fire and watched it burn to death. Last week in Virginia Beach 2 men were charged with killing a goose and her babies. Serial killers in the making-who knows??!! If you think this type of behavior is acceptable maybe this is how you are raising your children-to be mentally disturbed people walking the face of the earth.
animal abuse
Lets not forget animal abuse is how Jeffrey Dahmer and other serial killers got their start. An animal/pet is helpless by human standards, and we won't forget Vick and his cruelty. A little compassion goes a long ways. Only a coward would treat any animal this way. How can we excuse any person who would treat an animal like this? And I don't even like cats.
Thrown Kitten...
The person that did this is sick. That is the concern. My 10 yr old daughter & and I witnessed a motorist do the same thing to a small kitten on a four lane highway. In disbelief we saw it dodging in circles on the yellow line from the tires of the cars going by . With my daughter screaming - I stopped he car & I ran hoping it would not get squashed in front of me.I did the human thing (not the safest...) but rescued him. We tended to him the night till a vet saw him the next am. He had a shattered shoulder & concussion, It was to costly to do surgery on the little stray. But as my daughter will tell you "we gave him a nice dinner & love for maybe his first time". That is what it is all about people. Get the picture!!
It could be more....
PeTA could have made the reward a lot more if they didn't have to spend so much on lawyers defending them for the stupid things they've done in the past or will do in the future.
On the other hand, I'd be happy to beat the snot out of the person who did this free of charge as a public service.....
2 grand to find the person that tossed the kitty
3 grand if you can find a dumpster in NC...
ok bad joke...
this is the only redeeming thing they've done in a while. only hope they can keep this sorta thing up but time will tell. history is not on their side...
I agree with Charles and Lady
Take a look at the big picture. The biggest threat to the ecological balance in the world is the human species and its guilt ridden ego. We are the virus.
This is sad. .
They way some people think they are so superior to animals. Animals need our help, and I'm happy to say I do my part. My wife and I donate at least $2,000 a year and all of it is for wildlife. I don't give any money to human causes, as we are already overpopulated and we're slowly ruining the planet.
Will Peta...
Will Peta offer a reward to catch the people who killed all those dogs in the back of a van in North Carolina, and then threw the carcasses into dumpsters?
Oh wait, those were Peta employees.
PETA & cats
I am not a fan of the extreme things PETA goes after, either, but they have a reduced fee spay/neuter clinic for ferals that has been a great thing for the stray cats I've tried to help. They also offer standard vet services for your pets such as spay/neuter, vaccinations, chips at less cost than a full-service vet.
A QUESTION THIS PAPER WILL NEVER ASK
What percentage of donations to PETA is needed to cover its own operating costs? Does 93% sound right?
Always a lady
It's quite obvious that you are not an animal lover. There's room in everyone's lives and hearts to reach out and to help all living beings, not just humans.
I feel so sorry for you. You are missing out on a lot of joy, not to mention companionship that pets can bring.
Its a cat
It's a freaking cat. Get over it. Donate your time and engery to CHKD and help some of those children. Be more concern of a human life.
