Virginia is looking for additional help at the polls on Election Day.
State and local elections officials, including those in Norfolk, say they still need more than 2,000 people to help on Nov. 4 as election officers.
Officials say help is needed because of the projected increase in voter turnout and the addition of 300 new voting precincts since 2004. Besides Norfolk, other areas needing more workers include the cities of Richmond, Alexandria, Virginia Beach and Fairfax; and Chesterfield, Henrico, Loudoun, Frederick and Pittsylvania counties.
A person must apply to become an officer of election and must be a qualified voter. Payment differs from locality to locality, but is usually about $100.
Details on applying are available on the Virginia State Board of Elections Web site at www.sbe.virginia.gov or through local registrars.

It's a fact
I personally know of 2 voting polls in Norfolk where the senior citizen women in charge do not want any new faces working with them, and they will do and say anything to have new comers removed. That is a fact!!
sigh
If anyone saw the documentary I mentioned which ran on HBO, you will note that they uncovered actual voter poll fraud. They found that the Diebold systems have gaping security flaws, and that a voter could hand in a card that contains malware that will throw the election. They show how easy it is on the master server for the Diebold to change the results. Diebold has now changed the name of their voting machine company in an effort to look better. And no, I don't like either of the candidate options. Neither of them come close to inspiring me. I don't even feel very educated when it comes to where they stand, and I know that the things I do know exceeds that of which many of the people will vote on. I bet the average person goes by looks, or family party history.

So your saying you flagged him?
Ethan's inciteful comments
were out of place and totally irrational for this topic. The process needs voluteer voter registrars, and Ethans rants just discourages any positive purpose to this plea for citizens to get involved. I am delighted that the inciteful rant was removed. See you at the polls, Democrats - Republicans - And I seriously doubt that portsmouth refused any applicant for this public service 'white or black'.
Ethan's Comment
I think it was a tad harsh and over censorship for the Comment Police to have removed Ethan's comment. He clearly was not actually advocating trying to rig an election, rather - he was making a political point - one which many agree with. And the issues with the Diebold machines are well known.
Shame on the Pilot for removing his comment. When you begin arbitrarily removing comments, you being to lose all credibly of even trying to be a unbiased media outlet.
But
I often butt heads w/ Ethan but he is right on this one. Microsoft cannot even keep Outlook Express from crashing and the free world is left to the Diebolds? We can do better. Then again it seems Americans cannot even punch hoels in a piece of paper(hanging chads) correctly. We support the inking of fingers in Iraq. Funny.
For Ethan
You have the choice of voting for Ralph Nader, Bob Barr, or one of the even less well known candidates, to not vote at all, or to run for the office yourself in 2012. That way you're bound to get a candidate you agree with 100% of the time.
A true opportunity to contribute to the public good
it's so easy to apply on line - I have for Norfolk. I'm gathering many friends to assist and we're having an after election party to share our experiences performing this public service, can't wait.
One great relief in any democratic election in this area is that unqualified mouth pieces such as Ethan are not running for office. Amen.
wait for it...
"Shortages of poll workers in key neighborhoods are nothing more than an attempt to disenfranchise african-american voters."
I thought I'd beat them to the punch.....
