PORTSMOUTH
The Beazley Foundation has approved more than $620,000 in grants for programs around the region.
More than two dozen local recipients will receive grants, including youth camps, a hospital and schools, both public and private.
The largest grant, $100,000, was given to the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation for a digital mammography machine.
A grant of $50,000 went to educational outreach work of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, and $52,000 benefited the "Science Horizons" program of the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton.
A $50,000 grant went to a program for grandparents raising grandchildren, offered by Brighton Rock AME Zion Church.
The African American Historical Society of Portsmouth received $25,000 toward renovation of the building that once served as the only library for black residents of the city.
Other $25,000 grants went to the Hope House Foundation's "Drive for Affordable Housing" campaign, the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Foundation's building campaign and the Virginia Living Museum's capital campaign.
The Portsmouth-based Beazley Foundation was started in the late 1940s by the philanthropist Fred W. Beazley and his family.
