NORFOLK
Norfolk Public Health officials reported Wednesday that mosquito pools in the Glenrock and Stoney Point neighborhoods have tested positive for the West Nile virus.
The Glenrock neighborhood has been treated by the mosquito control division, and Stoney Point will be treated soon, according to a news release.
Mosquito surveillance, including trapping and testing, has increased because of the positive test results, the release stated.
The virus is spread through the bite of mosquitoes, and although most people do not get sick, there is a risk of more serious illnesses, including encephalitis and meningitis, it said. People older than 50 are at greater risk.
The health department urges residents to take the following steps to protect themselves:
- Repair windows and screens that would allow mosquitoes into the home.
- Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.
- Limit time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.
- Use insect repellents with the smallest percentage of DEET necessary for the time spent outdoors - no more than 50 percent for adults or 30 percent for children younger than 12.
- Eliminate standing water on tarps or flat roofs, and empty containers that collect water in the yard.

MY MISTAKE
Yes I read the article and didn't think the neighborhoods were in Portsmouth but I figured the Pilot knew better. I don't have to pull Portsmouth down, the city does it for me. My comments and opinions still stand.
Conspiracy?
Maybe the mosquitos in the Portsmouth pools are deliberately targeting Norfolk neighborhoods with West Nile virus. Anyone else sense a conspiracy? :-)

All I want to know is who is in charge of mosquito surveillance, what do they do and how much do they get paid?

did you even read the article???? It is titled Portsmouth however it's about Norfolk neighborhoods. Good grief, you want to put Portsmouth down so badly that you run your mouth before even reading the article. Get a life, even Portsmouth residents have one.

That Portsmouth is no better than a thirld world country. You would think that with the highest taxes in Tidewater that the city could get one thing right. I guess they took the mosquito control money and gave it to Social Services.
