Preseason Player of the Year: Phillip Sims, Oscar Smith

TOP 10 COLLEGE PROSPECTS

1. Jerod Askew, Oscar Smith linebacker: His stock keeps going up, up, up. Coaches see him and his game film, and say he’s a beast, which is exactly what they want.

2. Logan Heastie, Great Bridge wide receiver: He committed to West Virginia months ago, so all that remains for him is signing day. Or not. We’ll see.

3. Telvion Clark, Granby linebacker: Virginia Tech’s coaches were all smiles when he committed to Hokies. And why not? He’s quite the physical specimen.

4. Mike Privott, Lake Taylor linebacker: He committed to Louisville long ago and has proven during his high school career that he can find the football — fast.

5. Tim Smith, Oscar Smith defensive back/wide receiver: He has video-game-caliber moves and could put up incredible numbers this season as Phillip Sims’ main target.

6. Javanti Sparrow, Western Branch defensive back/wide receiver: An extremely impressive athlete with exceptional speed who has yet to commit — he could be big time.

7. Sterlin Phifer, Landstown running back: He already has committed to Boston College, and he’s going to be more than a handful for Beach District foes to try to stop this season.

8. Laroy Reynolds, Maury wide receiver/defensive back: Recruiters had been begun drool over this guy, but he committed to Virginia last month.

9. Carvin Powell, Great Bridge defensive back/wide receiver: He’s another player with ample upside and Division I size who has caught the eye of many recruiters.

10. Perry Jones, Oscar Smith linebacker: He committed to Virginia months ago, and some see him as a budding Bob Sanders, the Indianapolis Colts’ standout safety.
