The politics of envy . . .

There is a universal principle in play here. I can give my money to anyone I wish. So can you!
I nowadays just smile when I see the folks who generalize from "mom and dad owe us all an equal part of the inheritance" to "everytime money is being given out, everyone is owed an equal share." Not true. Not even for moms and dads and inheritances, really (but that's another subject).
If I go out on the street with a million bucks to give away and give it all to a little 5-yr-old girl just because she is cute, ugly, redhaired, blonde, or albino, that is my choice to make. No one can second guess me on where I spend my own $$$.
If someone doesn't like it, they are free to set up their own fund and spread it among those *they* consider worthy. Cheers, MGM

What im talking about is the

What im talking about is the fact their are alot of families of falled soldiers in this "community" that dont receive the type of attention as this ONE (notice the singular) individual. ALOT of children are going to grow up without their daddies. Does that mean that this ONE life is worth more than the others who give up their lives EVERY day so that people like you idiots can give you dollars and cents to some poor woman and her kids? That must be what you all think, but your right, she and her kids will not get a cent of my money.

Mike Phillips's family

Are you willing to give your life for your job? ....or are you just hoping you won't get into an accident on your way to work? If you don't want to give, then don't give, but let others receive the blessing from giving to a worthy cause and shut up!

no wonder

No wonder this country has issues. Just read some of the cold hearted self-centered comments below. I will support whatever cause I desire and even, perhaps, assist those who truly need help. Show someone to me who needs help and I'm gonna ask myself: 1) is their car newer than mine 8 yrs old); 2) got a flat panel tv and new computer and cell phone(not me) 3) buy "name brand" groceries (generics here) 4) working a job or trying to get one (regardless of what it is) 5) drinks and smokes 6)cable tv (full assortment of channels) Don't see any need for #7. People give their lives so you can talk your trash and live a decent life.....some of you below should be ashamed. Don't want to participate? Then don't and just keep your mouth shut.

Readers comments are a disgrace to all.

Wow!! A lot of you out there must be miserable to complain about the community helping others out. Maybe, what you guys are really upset with is how people band together in difficult time for the families involved and you have no one that would do that for yours. Usually when people try to take away from others it is because they do not have things for themselves. In this case it would be the spirit of caring.

It's Not The Money

The money isn't the important part of the fundraisers...it's the support of the community offered to this family. Those little boys are going to be growing up without their Daddy. I'm sure they would gladly trade being the honorees of these fundrasiers in favor of being able to have their Daddy at home again.

And ldy...Norfolk DID do something for Officers Reeves and Darden. Just like we did something for Officers Gilbert, Herring, and Burtt. Be careful of assuming.

This is getting REALLY OLD!

Ive made a couple post last week referencing the fact that this city is going overboard with the coverage and help for this family. Like I said before, it is a shame that this officer was killed, but give me a break. Everyday its something else about a benefit or fundraiser. Does the Virgina Beach Police Department not have a life insurance policy that their officers can take advantage of? How much money does this family need? Their are ALOT of people in this city who need help. Soldiers are dying everyday and were not shutting down the city to help their families. Who is responsible for setting up all of these activites? I wouldnt be suprised to see that all of these funds arent even going to the family. Lets all move on to something else...

why have one at all???

why do they need to do fundraisers for them anyways? They will be paid for the rest of their lives (the wife and children)why not help those who need the help? It's unfortunate that it happened but they will be taken care of and already are.....I know someone who's husband was a firefighter and got killed like 15 yrs ago and children are grown and the wife is still collecting a hefty check so please don't be fooled by all this.....yes the children will have a void in their lives but they are not the first and will not be the last ....they are many children who are raised without a parent or parents out here..mine included..do we see fundraisers for all the military wives out here who lost their husbands and children who lost their fathers in the line of duty...something to think about anyways....I people won't like what I have to say but it's the truth plain as day and most ,people want things sugar coated to numb reality for them which is sad....

re: ldy

I think there are two ways to take your comment, good and not so good. It is regretful that the fund raiser is being held in the first place, but glad this family is being helped just as the last VB fallen officer's family was. As for nothing being done for the Norfolk officers, suggest you ask your fellow residents of Norfolk that question, they obviously made a choice just as you have done with your comment. I reside in VB and am attending this event.

Reply to Well...

If you felt strongly enough about having a fundraiser for the Norfolk officers who were killed in the line of duty, then you should have organized one...... or two, or three, or four, or five.
