Letters to Editor - bLetters
We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.
The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

charlesm....
I certainly would never tell anyone when I am "packing", and if I used my name on these posts I would never admit to doing so. That could just invite trouble. I see nothing macho in owning or carrying a gun. In reality if I was macho I would believe I could take on a bad guy with my bare hands. For some it may be an ego trip, but that is their issue and I don't think that is the general rule-at least not amongst those I know who own guns and in some cases carry one concealed.
we can't go quietly
If you "anti-packers" would go quietly about your own business, then we "packers" could go quietly about our business. You complain, we defend (our RIGHTS). So let's make a deal. If you stop, I'll stop.
Why?
Why don't you "packers" learn to just go quietly about your business? You're like the young guys who have to tell they are packing because if no one knows, there's no macho glory in it.
ok i'll ask
First of all, I don't watch Star Trek. So I have no idea what a Prime Directive is. Second, what was your point? Did I really prove it? It seemed as though you were saying we should turn the other cheek.
Again--
WWJD? Thanks for proving my point...sheesh!
pondering the need to employ the Star Trek Prime Directive here...ha!
hmmm xxjoxx
It's hard to "turn the other cheek" if you're DEAD. Maybe you should try it though if that's what you want to do. Let me know how that works out for you. But me? I'll be "packing heat" to defend myself.
Hmmm
WWJD? Pack? Lock n' load?
Turn the other cheek?
Just my opinion
I agree with Riley
I was just talking to my sis the other day about how they always bring up the "Wild West" scenario. The term "Wild West" has as much validity as WMD's in Iraq. The wild west is only in the movies and books. If you look into history you find that a few instances have been turned into hundreds of stories (L.LAmour, et al). And if you look at a lot of the stories, it still took one honest citizen to stand up to the gang for the whole town. A quote from Adolf Hitler in 1935 reads: "This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future." I hope we don't forget how that went.

You call it paranoid, others call it being prepared.
We prepare for other foreseeable situations in our lives by purchasing life insurance for our family’s security, not to mention homeowners, renters, automobile, and medical insurance. All of these things are done proactively in an effort to forestall some of life’s most damaging events. The possibility of facing a dangerous perpetrator in society is a very real one; to not be prepared is at the very least imprudent.
You desire not to own or carry a firearm... that is your choice! Do not attempt to extend your choice to cover others who conduct themselves lawfully!!

Actually it sounds like you are more paranoid than the original letter writer. You don't have to be scared of LAW-ABIDING citizens that choose to exercise their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT of carrying a weapon. You just have to be scared of criminals that ignore the laws anyway.
Agreed For Sure....
I like how the anti-gun crowd have completely ignored the fact that the "wild west" shoot-em-up they said would happen with the concealed permits never happened. Those of us who choose to have guns and go through the legal process to carry them concealed are law abiding citizens who will not just shoot first and figure it out later. It is not the legal carriers of concealed weapons that anti-gun folks need to worry about, and hey we just might save one of their backsides sometime.
Concealed Carry
Concealed Carry
Ditto Riley.
When the Police are minutes away and you are seconds away from death, a Gun is the best lifesaver around.
Like dial 911 and Die. (the Police cannot be everywhere)
It is better to carry a Gun and not need it than to need one and not have it!
apranoid
Think, someone this paranoid is running around with a loaded gun.
The Point
The point is if you don't want to carry a gun, then don't. If you do want to carry a gun, then do so. That's the point.

That's my idea of "pro-choice"!
I'm very grateful that the state of Virginia allows the legal carrying of a concealed handgun. I think Virginia Beach has a great Police department, but, like you said, they can't be everywhere.
Back in New Jersey, things were a little different. Unless you were a politician, or a friend of a politician, it was virtually impossible to get a carry permit, unless your business really demanded it.
Of course, the Jersey felons didn't go by the rules, so they had no problem sticking an illegal pistol under your nose. And, if you got shot in a holdup, the police would be there within 10 minutes, to mark that chalk outline around your body, and have you carted away.
Personally, I like the Virginia system better. Here, at least you have a chance to defend yourself, if you so choose. That's my idea of "pro-choice"!

I agree with you 100 %
