VIRGINIA BEACH
A rabbit rescue group and Virginia Beach Animal Control officers took 31 rabbits from a shed in the Beach on Thursday.
John C. Doub, the founder of Virginia Rabbit Inc. in Chesapeake, said the property owner e-mailed his group asking it to come take the domestic rabbits from the shed, at a house on Wellfleet Court.
Twenty-nine of the rabbits are now at Virginia Beach SPCA. Two are at Virginia Rabbit Inc., Doub said.
“They’re under close supervision,” Doub said of the two. “We’re not sure one’s going to make it.”
He said the shed was too hot for the rabbits.
Doub said he went before a Virginia Beach magistrate on Thursday asking that the couple that owned the rabbits be charged with animal cruelty. A spokesman for Virginia Beach police said animal control officers had not decided if the case warranted criminal charges.

Uh no...
There are some issues here. First of all, I'm not sure what kind of "rescue" group picks up animals just to drop them off at a shelter. Additionally, these rabbits are not at the SPCA; they are at Virginia Beach Animal Control. For the record, all of our local shelters are overflowing with cats and these rabbits have to be housed in cat cages. This means more cats will die because there is not enough room. If you want a cat or a rabbit, please go to Animal Control and adopt one NOW.
Bet your for adortion too!
Bet you stand up for animals but also stand up and cheer for the late term adortions! Why don't you get out in the woods and see how cruel animals are to each other!
Also YOU don't know why that the rebbits were'nt care for! Maybe the health of the owner declined and could'nt care for them.
I hear, BUT, I understand -
What is not being realized is this,
Yes, there may have been wrongdoing previous to the act of calling for help, BUT, if you CHARGE them with a crime, then the NEXT time someone is in a like circumstance, it will continue, because to call for help, means getting a criminal charge.
Now what happens is the cruelty continues until ALL of the animals have died.
So, what's worse.. Leaving well enough alone, now that the rabbits now have a chance, or making sure in the future, they may NOT have a chance at all?
I hear ya JDOUB...
Unfortunately, there are many that do not understand. They feel that just because these people have finally decided what they were doing was wrong and requested help...that they should not be held accountable for the period of time they let this go on. Just because you finally get help for your neglected child, doesn't mean you don't have to answer for what happened before the help arrived. Is this how it really came to be?? I don't know. Only those involved know the facts. Point is you have to leave all possibilities open and let those who handle these things...handle them. Do any of the commentors (besides JDOUB) know how long the rabbits were there? Do you know the exact living conditions? Do you know the health status of the rabbits? No you say?? Then how are you so quick to criticize the possibility of charges against these people?
Hey Mr Doub!!!!!
...they were overwhellmed and needed help!!! and you want to punish them??? I'll make a big pot of Brunswick stew before I ever call you for help!
This peta
crap has got to stop! The man asked for help! Then they ask to file charges??? Rabbits are just like dolphin ( the fish not mammal) they are a food source! They breed fast, grow fast FOR A REASON!!!!! God made them that way as a food source for other animals of this planet!
Control the case? Yeah, ok...
JDoub,
There is something clearly wrong with your motives in this instance based on what I've read. You're right, we don't know all the particulars of the case; we can thank the Pilot for the sensationalism without the substance. However, that you have a couple trying to do the responsible thing by calling you for help should NOT get them charged. If this were an ongoing situation and they were NOT trying to alleviate the plight of the rabbits, then charge them, but they did try - think a judge would throw the case out too.
Unfortunately, though, it's difficult to understand your post because of the punctuation and grammatical errors, not to mention the improper use of words (i.e., effect is a noun, not a verb). Also, if you have a "team" that's not able to handle thirty-one rabbits (control the case), it doesn't sound like much of a team. I won't touch the obvious regarding future charges. Are you for real?
abuse
To clear up two details, the charges are filed by our team first to control the case, second would it be abuse to lock up a child in a cage without water and lay a functional gargen hose on the floor before him; for 3-days, if you were involved you would know the details.
Abuse charges cannot be charged on future events, but actions or inactions of the past; asking for help after one makes decisions that effects many is fine, but be prepared to answer for those actions.
Think for a minute.....
Why do people raise large amounts of domestic rabbits? For human consumption. Be real. Let's not get too weepy eyed over this.
Trying to file charges
Trying to file charges against them? That's what they get for asking for help?
