We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Republican denial

Shame on Republicans in Congress for their stubborn denial of what has become obvious. The time has come for bold action, not timid steps that would only continue our reliance upon an energy source that has become dangerously obsolete and far too problematic.

The time has come for America to check itself into rehab to kick this deadly oil habit once and for all. We need to perform an intervention on officials who are apparently either so deeply in denial or utterly self-interested that they cannot assess the full consequences of their resistance to radical and necessary change.

Al Gore's 10-year goal for energy reform should not be viewed as 'extreme' so much as it should be seen as the only sane proposal being made in what appears to be increasingly insane times.

The Republican Party needs to be issued a collective DUI and removed from behind the wheel of our country's leadership until it shows signs of global responsibility.

John Hutchinson

Betting on the Future

Whether our civilization does what is necessary to decrease and adapt to the global climate change our industrialization has sparked does not have anything to do with the personal quirks of Al Gore. This is really the most vital issue of our time and the future of this country (not to mention our species) depends on it. Neither the Dems not the Repugs are addressing it adequately but I think there is more of a chance that as the crisis deepens Obama will rise to the occasion as opposed to a McCain administration which will continue the resistance to environmentalism engendered by Cheney/Bush. Rationality and patriotism require that this issue be addressed in an effective way.

Algore?

What qualifications does Algore have that makes him an expert on energy policy? As far as I know he has never had a job. Don't you suspect he is up to his old tricks?

Jim King

What is with you liberals....

What is with you liberals. I have to admit that you are colorful in your backwards opinions but this contest of the best blogging orator really is getting old. The writer forgot the usual buzz words/phrases like neocon, head in the sand, cool aid drinker, blah, blah, blah. To continually characterize repubicans as the evil of the earth just discredits ones complete sense of balance. If one looks at what democrats/liberals have been able to infuse into our society, it would become clear that the intentions of the birth of our nation have been more eroded by socialist standards by liberals than republicans. However, some republicans have lost their compass as well.

Don't be hypocritical Phrog

That "protest" was a publicity stunt, and a person with the least bit of sense would be able to discern it as such. The republicans had their chance on July 25th - when they blocked an energy bill. Now they want to cry foul. So don't lecture us because you buy into a publicity stunt. As to the denial of the existence of global warming, don't worry, Bush and company will not be able to edit scientific research for too much longer.

Who is it that took a vacation from congress?

I’m sorry Mr. Hutchinson, but I have to take you to task on your rant. Three weeks ago it was the democrat congress that decided to take a five week vacation while the energy bill was still on the floor. It is the democrats who have abandoned the cause for energy independence. It is the democrats that have turned their backs on the energy crisis at hand. So don’t go lecturing us that it’s the republican’s entire fault. Get off your high donkey and come down to earth where you can see for yourself who needs to be realigned.
And if you want a serious debate on energy and environmental responsibility, please refrain from using the unhinged Al Gore as any credible “expert”.

Time Passes - How Sad

Similarly, it would seem to me that anyone who used the term "valley girl" could be considered to be somewhat that time has passed by and it would be hard to take them seriously. Guffaws all around.

Global Responsibility?

What is with all you people and this "global this, global that" mantra?

I would appreciate it if the United States Congress, and every other elected person in the United States would actually remember for a change just who they should be held responsible to --- the people that elected them in the first place.

Sorry Citizen get off Gores Koolaid

You are the one if you wrong if you support AL Gore and his half truths about global warming such LIES being spread by an ex vice president and they claim Big oil companies are the liers for profit try again.
No one cares about what he says when he can't get his facts straight or when he is the biggest fraud and lier just trying to profit off others fears. Has Big brother AL told you the truth about the fact that the earth has cooled for the last 10 yrs? thought not it doesn't fit his inconvient truth huh?
You claiming that People around here wouldn't understand all the multi-syllable words anyway I tend to disagree because most intelligent people can think and see through the lies being spread by this man and others like him just trying to profit off the innocenance of others. Try a new approach and use this thing called the internet which Gore claims he invented and find out the true facts about Global war

You caused me to laugh....

Similarly, it would seem to me that anyone who used the term OMG could be considered to be somewhat of a "valley girl" and it would be hard to take them seriously. Chuckles all around.

Yeah...

Who cares what a Nobel Prize winner has to say?

People around here wouldn't understand all the multi-syllable words anyway.

Al Gore? OMG

Anyone who references Al Gore about anything is hard to be taken seriously.
