RICHMOND

A study shows Virginians are downloading information from the Internet faster than last year.

The 2008 study was done by the Communications Workers of America's Speedmatters.org project.

Virginia jumped from 11th nationally to fourth in median download speeds.

In Virginia, the median broadband speed is 5 megabits per second, compared to 2.4 last year.

Nationally, the median download speed this year is 2.34 megabits per second, up from 1.97 last year. Rhode Island topped the list with 6.76 megabits per second.

This year's report is based on 229,494 speed tests conducted on the Speed Matters Web site.

According to the report, the U.S. continues to trail behind countries such as Japan, South Korea and France.
