Police have charged an 18-year-old summer student with having a gun at school.

Michael A. Colon Jr., of the 3000 block of Silver Charm Circle, is charged with a felony count of possession of a firearm on school property, according to spokeswoman Debbie George.

On Friday police arrested Colon at Lakeland High School after a fight, George said. Someone told school officials that one of the students  involved in the fight had a gun, George said. Police searched a vehicle in the school's parking lot and found an unloaded gun and ammunition inside a book bag, according to George.

Colon, who had an outstanding hit-and-run warrant on file, police said, has been suspended with a recommendation for expulsion, George said.

The warrant arose from a incident in which Colon hit a parked car, George said. As a pending, non-violent misdemeanor charge it would not have affected Colon's school status, George said, and the school may not have been aware of the charge.
