Tides fail in the clutch; playoff hopes fading

Posted to: Norfolk Sports Tides

Staff report

Jason Bourgeois hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Jason Tyner with the winning run Sunday night in the Charlotte Knights' 2-1 victory against the Norfolk Tides in Fort Mill, S.C.

Tyner led off and reached base on a throwing error by Norfolk third baseman Freddie Bynum. A sacrifice bunt sent Tyner to second before Robert Valido struck out swinging.

Bourgeois then lined a single to leftfield against reliever Jim Miller (3-5) to send the Tides to their fifth loss in six games.

Norfolk (62-73) is 6-1/2 games behind first-place Durham (69-67) in the International League's South Division with eight games to play.

Chris Roberson's solo homer gave the Tides their only run and tied the score at 1 in the seventh. Norfolk, which faces Charlotte again tonight, was 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
