Two ships will return to Norfolk Naval Station on Monday, the Navy said today.
The ships coming home are the guided-missile destroyer Gonzalez and the guided-missile frigate Nicholas, according to a statement from Atlantic Fleet Naval Surface Force.
Both vessels were on a six-month deployment to the 6th Fleet area of operations.
The Gonzalez conducted security operations with NATO and participated in multinational operations.
The ship is named for Marine Sgt. Alfredo Gonzalez of Texas, who was killed Feb. 4, 1968 in Vietnam. He was a platoon commander who received the Medal of Honor for exposing himself to heavy fire to destroy enemy positions and protect his troops during the Battle of Hue.
Dolia Gonzalez, his mother, will be part of a special presentation ceremony after the ship arrives in Norfolk, the Navy said.
The Gonzalez has more than 275 sailors. The Nicholas, which participated in security operations and humanitarian efforts during its deployment, has more than 175 sailors.
