We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Undocumented misnomer

THE AUTHOR of "Shameful attitude" (letter, Aug. 10) states that undocumented immigrants are not criminals. Yes, they are; they are illegal aliens (someone who goes to live or work in another country but doesn’t have the legal right). Calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist.

George

Never said I *was* prejudiced. I played out (and knocked down) your straw man about people who are for increasing *legal* immigration somehow being prejudiced against *illegal* line jumpers. When we clean up this immigration mess, and we will, you will see how the fear of raising quotas was *directly related* to the 12 million illegals already in our country. We will assimilate them, but it will take time and they will need to declare themselves illegal and wait in line with the others. I think we will let them stay here to do that, but they will need to come clean beforehand and take a number.
So I am going to be labeled "superstitious" because I am a born-again Christian? Is that what you were saying? And you call *me* prejudiced? Interesting. Cheers, MGM
P.S. Which groups are you active in to help the people around you? Where do you donate cash to help others?

You stated your were prejudice in your earlier post.

Knowing now that you are superstitious too tells me much. Bottom line; you are not very logical.

George

Amazing how you've never met me but you just know I am prejudiced. How far outside your narrow views can a person be without getting labeled? An inch or two?

Actually, we are in a multi-racial conservative church that would probably make your blood boil because we are mostly *all* conservatives. As in black conservatives, Mexican conservatives, Indian conservatives, Asian conservatives, and, of course, white conservatives, whom I am sure you would all label as prejudiced. Well, have fun calling names. Meanwhile, we will take on some projects to better our world. Cheer, MGM

Prejudice makes you blind

You still don't get it. The INS is understaffed and underfunded. Your friends are victims of the bureaucracy, not Mexicans.
Your assumption that the number of illegal immigrants affects quotas of documented immigration is absurd, illogical and wrong.

Yes . . .

CB, you're right. Obviously I have hired contractors but I *is* not one (ha ha!).

And, "linejumpers" is only prejudicial if you assert, George, that I am prejudiced *for* the two young men in India who are patiently waiting to come to school here and *against* the illegals, many from Mexico, who are flooding this country and making raised quotas impossible. Let's just say I *am* for Indians and against Mexicans. Wouldn't that make you *against* Indians and for Mexicans? What do you have against India anyways (rhetorical question--just trying to show you how ridiculous this whole line of reasoning is. I am *for* people who wait their turn, and I have been since kindergarten). Cheers, MGM

Not to get off of subject Mary but....

Bonded contractor means "A bond is an insurance policy for which the contractor pays a premium. It guarantees that the contractor will meet his obligations in a satisfactory manner. Failure to do so should result in the payment of compensation by the bonding company. There are three types of bonds, payment bond, performance bond and bid bond." Don't you mean contractor is not "insured" as far as personal injury of the illegals?

Migra migraine.

"The linejumpers are stopping us from raising the legal quotas."

If quotas were increased there would be less undocumented immigrants!
However, the INS could not handle the load anyway!
Your phrase "linejumper" exposes a prejudicial mind set and yes, hostility.

Hey, George, you're on a rant!

Some of us are trying to find a bipartisan way to solve a bipartisan problem. Fingerpointing is silly as the R's profit from the cheap labor market the illegals provide, while the D's profit from any of them they can get to vote (don't laugh--they can eventually be naturalized or even vote as part of a stolen identity).
I am for increasing the quotas of *legal* immigrants. I personally know people waiting in line to enter this country who have waited over a year. The linejumpers are stopping us from raising the legal quotas. I am for getting them into the line also, but the debate is about when and how (because they really can't be rewarded for cutting the line, so they will have to wait like everyone else).
Been in court lately? The lawyers do all the talking. And personal injury lawyers are not going to let you change the subject to the immigration status of the person who filed the lawsuit. Cheers,

MGM

1- You missed the point. Lawbreaking employers are the cause of the problem, illegal immigrants are result.
2- Sued by an illegal alien? Ask for their documentation in front of a judge.
3- The inefficiency of the INS is one of the major contributors to the undocumented status of many productive workers. Under funded and grossly mismanaged by a corrupt and confused administration.

Punishing the employers . . .

Exactly, I agree.
Some employers may have two complete sets of staff, one legal and one illegal. For example, the Verizon subcontractors and their ditch diggers may pay the illegals $17 an hour under the table, then pay their legal workers $17 an hour plus $17 an hour in *benefits* (it's usually pretty close to the same total).
Now, you gotta wonder, what happens if one of the ditch diggers gets injured on your property. Say he is working in the easement but he steps off and falls into a mole hole on your part of the property. Since the guy is invisible on the subcontractor's rolls, I very much doubt that any bonding the subcontractor has bothered to take out applies to him for workman's comp. Will we see homeowners in our area being sued by workers who claim to have been injured laying cable on their property? Most of them know we carry homeowner's insurance. Cheers, MGM

Punish The Employers Also

They need to start punishing the people who hire illegal aliens by giving them some serious jail time and heavy fines. Many of the employers of illegal aliens are paying them with cash or under the table and avoiding federal, social security taxes, state taxes, workers compensation taxes and other benefits. As long as the people who hire the illegal aliens can get away with it the problem will continue. Americans generally welcome those who come here legally.

What part of

ILLEGAL is being misunderstood?????

George K!

No, not hostility. A spirit of fair play. I know people in India waiting in line to enter our country legally, papers in order, vaccinations finished. Why should linejumpers get ahead of these folks who only want to better themselves and their families, too? Let's work on raising legal quotas, not aiding and abetting those who cut lines. Cheers, MGM

perfect!!

I love the analogy!

Hiring undocumented workers is a crime.

Yet, much hostility is aimed at immigrants willing to work for low pay.
Shades of Pogo revisited: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Bravo!

Bravo! Way to go, John.

That would have been a perfect line for George Carlin.

Sorry, I can't improve on it!

Agreed

Amen
