Update on 'For Better or for Worse' comic strip

Posted to: Entertainment Spotlight

The “For Better or for Worse” comic strip The Pilot has carried for years is changing. Author Lynn Johnston ended her 29-year narrative over Labor Day weekend, and is redrawing her strip from the beginning, when her characters were young. She’ll use a combination of new and old material.

Her semi-retirement has caused a stir across the country among fans and newspaper editors – Google her to check out the chatter.

During the next month or so, we’ll keep her strip on the comics page in The Daily Break section of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper so you can tell us if you like the new format or if it’s time for us to try something different. At the same time, we’ll show you a few other popular strips. You may recognize some of them from a comics poll we ran last year.

Check out the trial strips:

-''Mutts''

-''Pearls Before Swine''

-"The Pajama Diaries"

what to drop

Need space on comic page? Drop 'Close to Home'; badly drawn and just plain stoopid. Need to drop a strip? Get rid of 'Garfield'; trite and over done; ran out of ideas years ago.

Frazz is good. Pleez use that.

cheerz

Mutts

I have long loved Mutts and read everyday before we moved to Hampton Roads. It would be great to see it added to the Pilot. Pearls Before Swine is funny too, but Mutts would be my first choice.

Pearls Before Swine

I like this much better than Pajama Diaries. There are enough "family" strips as it is. I like the more off-beat strips like Pearls, Over the Hedge, Get Fuzzy, Frank & Ernest & Pooch Cafe. I think there is room for more than one replacement, with lots of fresh choices.

strip replacement

Pearls Before Swine is awful. Stupid, cynical and just plain badly drawn.

Pajama Game not much better.

Here's a half dozen I'd like to see daily:
Over The Hedge
Frazz
Frank & Ernest
Shoe
Adam@Home
Cleats

FBOFW

I have followed fbofw since my own kids were born. It has always been funny and appropriate. No offensive content, family oriented, i have even bought the published books. This is one of the best drawn, showing great care for details, and is actually grammatically correct (more than i can say for the columnists and editors of the pilot, who cannot conjugate verbs). No slang, no unintelligble anagrams - alphabet soup (not all of us are military and love these). It is good to repeat these strips, because the younger fans can see what has gone before.
as to these other strips, they show lack of talent and a juvenile language. The newspaper is already written for six year olds, must we regress even further?

Pearls Before Swine

You can not be serious. We went through this crap last year. How about skipping all the trash you pushed on us last year and give us something worthwhile.

new comic strip please?

I think For Better or Worse is one of the most boring comic strips on the page. It had it's day, now it needs to move on. I'm delighted to see that Pearls Before Swine is featured today as it is one of my favorites! It was really disappointing when Pearls Before Swine wasn't added last time the comics were changed up.

Keep FBOFW!

I don't find "Pajama Diaries" the least bit humerous. I've been a faithful fan of "For Better Or For Worse" for many years, but didn't get to see the early years. So I'd love to see this excellent quality comic kept in our local paper. I also agree with another comment about the quantity of comics in our paper. I visited Houston recently, and they have 2 full pages plus 3 on another page of comics every day!

DITCH THE FAMILY STRIPS AND RUN "GET FUZZY"!

Oh dear God, not yet another "family" comic strip in the Va. Pilot. God, please no. FBOFW absolutely stinks now. Please get rid of it. And don't start running yet another insipid family-oriented strip. Blondie, Marvin, Denice the Menice, Family Circus, Baby Blues, Sally Forth, Curtis, Jump Start - LET THE MADNESS STOP! Please offer an intelligent, funny strip to your readers - the hysterical "Get Fuzzy". Bucky Katt is the anti-Garfield (yet another dumb comic this paper runs), and "Get Fuzzy" never fails to provide fresh, biting wit. Please, throw us comics-readers who have a modicum of intelligence a bone - dump FBOFW and start running "Get Fuzzy".

Comics pages needs lots of help

In almost every city I've been in, large or small, they have twice the comics that we do. My two favorites, Pearls before Swine and Sherman's Lagoon are in almost all of them too. I for one hope we can get one of those instead of the Pajama Diaries.

New comics

I think that "My Cage" would be a good replacement. I read it every day from another newspaper's web site.

Move on to new material...

I was a fan of FBOFW when I was growing up. I grew up, so did it. It has ended its run and after surveying the material of new cartoonists I have found the Pajama Diaries exceptional. In time will people compare these two strips - the style, the writing, etc... possibly. Is it really fair to have a poll comparing a strip that has run for 29+ years against a new strip that has only run for 2 years (in a limited market). I think not. I have been lucky enough to travel through the cities the Pajama Diaries is published and have grown to appreciate the stories, art, and writing. My kudos to Ms Libenson. I think if she is given the chance she may just be the next big superstar.
An Appreciative Fan.

FBOFW Comic

I think that it's time to retire this strip. I loved it but it has concluded and should stay retired. We need fresh material.

Comics

The strip, "For Better or for Worse," is one that my husband and I enjoy very much. Since we did not get to see the first 20+ years of the strip, we would very much appreciate the chance to see it from the beginning. The strip is heartwarming and amusing at the same time.

Keep FBFW

As one who has been able to read FBFW in various papers since 1980, I'd love to see the strip continue to run in the Pilot. Like any strip, the earlier years have a different style of and theme to the humor. Also, the strip relies more on its humor and less on storytelling, which I think those who are voting down on the strip would appreciate if they gave it a chance.

On the other hand, strips like Marvin, Family Circle, Dennis the Menace, Beetle Bailey, and even Garfield haven't been funny or even mildly entertaining in years. Those are also strips that I started reading years ago and even enjoyed enough to buy the early books of some of them. How many of the people that are still reading them are simply doing so out of force of habit? (Not to mention the 'soap' strips.)

give it a shot

All the strips mentioned are good, but Pajama Diaries isn't a typical family strip. It's told from the female character's view and it's much more timely than FBOFW. My wife reads it online and loves it (thinks it's written in "her" voice). The problem is people need to give it more than a quick glance.

FBOFW

Please drop FBOFW. I know how it ends! However, it's still preferable to Pajama Diaries. There must be better choices out there. Who else doesn"t like rex morgan m.d. with guns on the comic page? I eagerly await other choices.

FOR BETTER OR WORSE

A nice, family oriented, biographical strip with no axes to grind. None of us have seen the whole 29 years of the strip and by keeping the strip it would gives us the opportunity to see some of her earlier work.

Please Update the Comics Page

There are so many good comics out there. Pickles was a good choice but a safe choice. Pearls Before Swine. Get Fuzzy. Brewster Rocket. Day by Day. Cul De Sac. Sherman's Lagoon. Please drop Marvin. Drop the Sunday Foxtrot. I liked FBOFW, but they've had 30 years, it's time to give something else a try.

Time to say goodbye

It's time to say goodbye to FBOFW. The strip's quality has plummeted badly in recent years, and instead of just retiring outright the artist decides she wants a "do-over" for her older strips. The Pilot badly needs some fresh blood on its comics page - what isn't "family-friendly" pablum (Zits, Baby Blues, Pickles) is clunky and outdated "classics" (Blondie, Family Circus, Rex Morgan). Please get rid of FBOFW and bring in something that's actually funny, like Pearls Before Swine or Get Fuzzy, both of which have won awards for their freshness and humor.

New comic strip

I would love to see GET FUZZY as the new comic strip.
