The financial-services organization USAA said today that it expanded the eligibility for its membership to all military retirees and to former military personnel who were honorably discharged on or after Jan. 1, 1996.
The organization, which has a regional office in Norfolk and several thousand members in Hampton Roads, is best known for the auto and homeowners insurance it makes available to its members.
Founded in 1922 by a group of Army officers, USAA limited its membership for several decades to officers, retired officers and members of their families. It broadened its field of membership to enlisted personnel and their families in 1996.
The organization, based in San Antonio, has 6.4 million members.

Anyone remember...
Anyone remember when Chartway was Naval Air Federal Credit Union, and were much better?
A Great Company
They offer membership to all military retirees of all wars now! Pays to do twenty!

My guess is that they intend to but they need to grow at a rate where the employees will be able to provide a certain level of service. If they just opened the floodgates imagine how many people would be calling in for quotes?
USAA
I beleive that the purpose of extending the membership dates is to build up the number of client's which is good buisness. However why did they limit to veteran's from 1996 on, don't the vet's who served prior to 96 deserve the same opportunity ???? Maybe they don't like Viet Nam VET's! Maybe they will review this decision.?????
Good experiences here
While not ecstatic enough to go all caps, I would recommend USAA to the people that now have access with this rule change. I have auto, home owners, and flood insurance and all my claims have been handled quickly and fairly.
I LOVE USAA
