A Wakefield man is recovering today from a wreck Thursday morning on U.S. 460, in which his mother died.

At about 10:45 a.m., a west bound tractor trailer drove off the road and into the ditch, but as the driver attempted to pull back onto the road, he overcorrected and went into the east bound lanes of U.S. 460, said Virginia State Police Sgt. A.D. Williams.

When the tractor trailer crossed into the east bound lanes, a Ford Explorer collided with it.

The driver, Allen Willis, and his mother, Mary Willis, were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mary Willis died at the hospital, Williams said. Allen Willis was listed in critical condition this morning.

William Meade, 38, of Richmond, the tractor trailer driver, reported minor injuries to his hand, was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

He was also charged with reckless driving, Williams said.

The wreck, which shut down traffic on U.S. 460 between Windsor and Zuni until 7:30 last night, is still under investigation, by the Virginia State Police Fatal Crash Reconstruction Team.
