Zach Luckett update ...

Many (ALL?) of you know by now that Zach Luckett, projected to start at flanker for Tech this fall, has been arrested for DUI and indefinitely suspended from the team.

Here are the latest details I’ve been able to gather:

A little after 1 a.m. Sunday, Luckett backed his Mercury Mountaineer into a green dumpster in a store parking lot and pulled away without checking for damage, at which point he was pulled over. After a series of failed sobriety tests, Luckett then blew a .16 – twice the legal limit – back at the police station.

Because this is Luckett’s second DUI charge in less than five years, a police spokesman said, he faces a mandatory $500 fine and one-month jail sentence if convicted. He could spend as much as a year in jail, but would serve no less than 20 days if convicted.

Luckett has been arrested or cited by police at least once every year he’s been in Blacksburg. He was fined for public urination in 2006. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident in 2007, which was later dismissed.

I’ve checked several court records in Virginia and cannot find when or where his previous DUI occurred. It’s possible it happened back home in New Jersey.

I’ve requested to talk to coach Frank Beamer after practice, along with a couple of guys who might fill the void left by Luckett: Freshman Dyrell Roberts and CB Victor “Macho” Harris. I’ll be back this evening with more from them.

Stay tuned.

As usual, great stuff.

Also, can you check and see if they might move Ike over to flanker? They might do that at least until they see how Dyrell works out in first few games.
