Cox 20, #4 Kellam 10

VIRGINIA BEACH

Severen Rucker and Troy Ruediger each rushed for first-quarter touchdowns to help power the host Falcons (3-1) to a Beach District upset win and its best start in over a decade.

Rucker capped Cox’s first possession with 33-yard scoring scamper, and the Falcons defense recovered a James Taylor four plays into Kellam’s first possession.

Three plays later, Ruediger scrambled back for a pass, tucked the ball away, ran up the middle and then dashed down the left side 52 yards to stake Cox to a 13-0 first quarter lead.

The Falcons haven’t started a season 3-1 since 1996.

Trent Martin booted a 26-yard field goal to put the Knights (3-1) on the scoreboard with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.

Tallwood 7, Princess Anne 2

VIRGINIA BEACH

Dee Whitaker’s 17-yard touchdown reception was all Tallwood needed to hold off visiting Princess Anne. The Lions (2-2) limited the Cavaliers (0-4) to 92 yards of offense, and Princess Anne’s only points came on a safety by Wallace Peeples, who tackled Whitaker in the end zone in the second quarter.

But Whitaker would get his revenge shortly after halftime when he caught a pass from Lance Waddell over the middle and burst through a seam before crossing the goal line to give Tallwood the only touchdown of the game.

The Lions would play conservatively thereafter, sustaining possession and running out the final 7:25 of the game.

Key stats: Tallwood, Byron Parker: 16 carries for 71 yards, Whitaker: 10 carries for 28 yards, 1 reception for 17 yards, 1 touchdown. P.A., Xavier Morgan, 14 carries for 44 yards.

He said it: “It was a nightmare game. I’m just happy to get the win.” -- Tallwood coach Thad Harold
