Chesapeake council voting tonight on city water near fly ash golf course

Posted to: Chesapeake News

Tonight, the City Council will vote whether to make an emergency appropriation of $6 million to extend public water to people who live near the Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville.

The money will come from Dominion Virginia Power, which provided 1.5 million tons of fly ash used to build the course.

The city has chosen a consultant to study the best and most cost-effecitve way to deliver safe water to the residents on Murray Drive and Whittamore Road. Residents on those streets have been concerned that heavy metals from the ash could contaminate nearby wells.

Groundwater monitoring on the golf course found high levels of arsenic, lead, chromium and other contaminants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is now studying the site.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in City Council chambers, 306 Cedar Road.
