CHESAPEAKE

A man accused of killing his dog with a sword is scheduled to appear in Chesapeake General District Court this morning.

Robert A. Young, 46, of the 2600 block of Darley Lane, is charged with felony animal cruelty and having no rabies vaccination or city license for the dog.

Neighbors reported seeing a man gesturing to his pit bull with a sword outside of his home at Chesapeake Mobile Home Park Sunday evening, said Chesapeake police spokeswoman Dorienne Boykin. The man then went inside with the dog and returned about 15 minutes later with its body, she said.

Boykin said police arrived about 6:40 p.m. and arrested Young without incident. They found no other animals or people at the home, she said.

Mobile home park owner John Tamraz said Young had lived there for "a very short time" with his wife.

"We're just as shocked as everybody else," he said.

Word traveled fast among neighbors, several of whom said they also were stunned.

"The most I've ever heard out here is a drug raid," said Sabrina Cowles, who has lived in the area for about five years.

B.J. Zeedyk, who lives across the street from the trailer where Young lives, said her 8-pound Chihuahua named Honey Girl would bark at the much bigger pit bull.

"If he was a mean dog, he could have just swallowed her whole," Zeedyk said. "It was a good dog. He just ignored her."
