Comics trial: 'Mutts'

Posted to: Entertainment Spotlight

We’ve been overwhelmed by readers’ positive response to both the new-old “For Better or For Worse” and last week’s trial comic strip, “Pearls Before Swine.”  Here’s another many folks asked us to try.

Your thoughts:  Vote for your fave and tell us what you think.

“Mutts” is the creation of Patrick McDonnell, a former freelance illustrator. The strip debuted in 1994 and has won loads of awards from comics organizations, as well as environmentalists and animal rights groups, including PETA. Charles Schulz, the late creator of “Peanuts,” reportedly described it as "one of the best comic strips of all time." Learn more.

I like Frazz. The title character reminds me of Calvin, who I miss. Pearls is OK, but if you are going to add only one I would prefer Frazz; and I have no more problem with FBOFW recycles than with Peanuts recycles, so let your space budget and that other budget be your guide, and, oh yes, your conscience. ~~Gordon

Frazz

Not NEARLY so bad as Pearls before Swine, yet not nearly as good as For Better or For Worse.

Pearls!

I still gotta vote for Pearls. I hope along with this change the Pilot will finally update the Sunday funnies as well. They should drop the strips not carried daily - Foxtrot, Shoe, etc - and start running the Sunday strips they do carry - Zits, Pickles, etc. Maybe they're waiting for Opus' imminent retirement to shake things up.

"For Better or For Worse"

I voted for this comic over the others because i enjoy reading about real people as opposed to animals pretending to be people or whatever--i have followed this comicstrip since i started reading the "Pilot" and would love to see the "beginning" of the strip now that i know the ending--i have read the "Pearls Befor Swine" in your small freebie that i pick up at the self-stand and "frankly" it leaves me cold--i don't know anything about the other two strips, but the thought doesn't excite me---let's see how Lynn's comicstrip family got to be where they are now--it is a pleasure to read her strip along with "Family Circus" and the other down-to-earth strips. Thank you for the opportunity to have my say!

For Better or For Worse

For Better or For Worse is popular. Lots of us like the characters and stories and want to see the beginning. Maybe substitute new comics for other strips that are the same day after day and boring.

comics

I see that For Better or For Worse and Pearls Before Swine are about even in the voting. Why not keep both and get rid of Marvin!

Ahh...save the sweet dopey humor

I have to agree. This is not a strip that I would routinely return to see with much anticipation. Awards and accolades aside, a new "different" strip needs to be discovered. Not just something to fill in the space.

Mutts

Mutts is truly an appropriate name because it is for the dogs!!! Ugh!

Pearls!

I think Mutts is a good strip although the strips run this week so far are sort of lame. Some of his stuff is just sublime though, like when he calls attention to shelter animals. I still cast my vote for Pearls, and I hope that if the votes for Mutts and Pearls cancel each other out, that the Pilot will remember that more voted for strips OTHER than FBOFW. The new FBOFW is just a clone of a little kid strip - which we've already got with Baby Blues, Marvin and to some extent with Sally Forth and Curtis. Honestly, you could probably solve the problem by just ditching Marvin (most consistently lame) and Garfield (jumped the shark once John got a girlfriend).

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

"Mutts" is BORING. More cutesy-cute animals with lame jokes - nope, not funny or interesting at all. And as for the late Charles Schulz's praise of it...well, I don't know that I'd take a comics recommendation from a guy who's been dead for more than eight years. I'm still solidly behind "Pearls Before Swine", and I'm apparently not the only one. Let's go for something DIFFERENT this time around, please.
