Drake, Nye trade barbs over offshore drilling

VIRGINIA BEACH

U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake and challenger Glenn Nye traded barbs Monday on offshore drilling, the subject of multiple bills expected to come before the House and Senate this week.

Drake, a Republican, instigated the skirmish with a news conference in which she criticized a proposal from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that would lift the congressional moratorium on drilling but give the tax revenue to the federal government, not states.

"I think it's crucial we ask Glenn Nye how he would vote on the bill," Drake said.

Nye, a Democrat, said he supports offshore drilling with revenues going to the states.

"We need to drill on and offshore immediately, and Virginia must be given its share of the pie."

Drake also criticized Nye for changing his position on drilling. Until last month, Nye, as most national Democrats, was against offshore drilling.

The two candidates held their first debate Friday but were not asked any energy-related questions.

The 2nd District includes Virginia Beach, parts of Norfolk and Hampton, and the Eastern Shore.

We need a "None of the above" box on ballot

Based on the comments here it seems that the citizens would be best served with a "None of the above" box on ballot. Me. I am voting for Thema Drake. She agrees with my views far more than she disagrees. And no, I am not a Republican. I am a Libertarian.

well bjones

"That would be the House leadership with a 19% approval rating. Do you think he will do anything but parrot Nancy Pelosi's dictates?"

And just what has Thelma Drake done, but be in lockstep with Bush 95% of the time?

At least Nye thinks for himself

While I wasn't happy about Nye changing his support for offshore drilling. I'd rather have someone who thinks for himself and what's best for his district rather than pandering to Bush.

Glenn resume impresses me a lot more too. Did you know he helped organize a rescue or 26 American citizens and authorized the release of one American hostage during the civil war in Macedonia. Or that he volunteered to serve in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq (and made numerous excursions outside the Green Zone--something I doubt Thelma did)

Frankly Glenn previous job is a lot more impressive than Thelma's pre-politcal career: selling houses

you hyperpartisans just kill me

Can't you see the logical inconsistency in condemming Rep Drake for voting with Bush 96% of the time. That is a guy with a 33% approval rating. What do you think Glenn Nye, bought and paid for by the House leadership will do? That would be the House leadership with a 19% approval rating. Do you think he will do anything but parrot Nancy Pelosi's dictates? Look how he switched on the offshore drilling, once Nancy cleared him to do so. Expect anything different once he is in office? I know -- for some of you, he is a Democrat, and that is all that matters. But stop acting like you have a brain, and just admit that you are a hyperpartisan.

Please, no more Drake or McBush...

Who ARE these people who keep voting Drake in?
I suspect that they are the same folks who voted for their
beloved simpleton "w" - TWICE - and would vote for him again if they could! Wake up America!

Wow - politicians telling people what they want to hear? Really?

Imagine that, a politicians sticking their finger in the way, sensing a change in the direction of the wind, and changing their position to pander to the whims of their electoriate. Of course we all know how little what is promised during a campaign will mean should the individual win election. Suddenly "ythings change" and the promises they made are simply ignored - unless it was a promise to a business interest or union that wrote them a big check. Somehow THOSE promises seem to be remembered ... pitiful, isn't it?

Against Offshore Drilling

Well, I can't vote for Drake and now I can't vote for Nye. They're all the same and will do whatever they have to to get elected to Washington. Where are the candidates that follow their own beliefs and don't get swept up into current trends and ideals?

rank hypocracy?

Remember when Meyera wanted Thelma to return a contribution from one of VB's leading employers? Well, it turns out that Glenn Nye's #1 contributor, to the tune of $10,000, is the National Leadership PAC. Who is the National Leadership PAC? None other than the head of the House Ways and Means committee, Democrat Charlie Rangel. That would be the guy who writes the tax code you and I are supposed to live up to, then forgets he has rental income. Who sold a Florida condo for a $70,000 profit, then forget to report the income -- required by the same laws he is responsible for. Who violated House ethics rules to by using congressional stationery to solicit meetings with wealthy New Yorkers. Who, in violation of rent control ordinances, lived in three below market rate apartments. Want to bet on which of two events occurs first? Meyera calling on Nye to return Rangel's tainted money, or the VP reporting on the Nye-Rangel $10,000 pipeline?

Thelma Drake

Thelma Drake is a joke. Most of the time she has no idea what she is talking about and is nothing more than a puppet for Bush. She cannot state an original thought of her own nor does she have an understanding of what her constituents truly desire. She is so out of touch with the voting public. She should go back to selling real estate.

ask Thelma Bush-Rove-Drake

Why she has been in lockstep with George Bush and voted over 99% for everything that man wanted. Ask Thelma Drake, who in the republican party will tell her how to vote, what to say, and how to say it. Will it be Karl Rove? Ask Thelma Drake to provide a complete list of her voting record to be printed in the VA Pilot.

Drake is . .

Last years garbage. Let us please disposes of it an FORGET IT! Drake is the worst puppet I've seen. . Even too dumb to take master's orders. Too the landfill.

just say no

I don't like Thelma and sure won't vote for Ney. Guess it's Thelma by default. Ney, we know you're a vet...let's stop the overkill huh? From a Nam vet.
