Desmond Lee changed his mind.
More than a month after opting to forgo football season to focus on basketball, Lee returned as Booker T. Washington’s quarterback last week. Lee completed 5 of 14 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted once in the Bookers’ first victory after an 0-4 start.
“The game was a little fast for him at the beginning, but he seemed to do better in the second half,” coach Ron Bolton said. “He’s an experienced guy. He’s been back there, he’s seen a lot, and he can throw the football, which is what we need in a quarterback. A lot of people try to pack the line of scrimmage against us and weren’t threatened by the pass.”
Before Saturday’s 20-14 victory over Granby, Bookers quarterbacks had thrown for just 114 yards without a touchdown but with seven interceptions.
Lee led the Eastern District in passing last season, throwing for 1,192 yards and 13 touchdowns.
“It was his decision to make, and I’m glad he made the right decision for himself,” Bolton said. “Obviously he’s a talent at football without a doubt. The more things you can do, the better your chances of earning a scholarship or being seen.”
For Atlantic Shores, it’s all coming together
Atlantic Shores has a three-game winning streak and No. 1 state ranking thanks to “a lot of little things coming together,” coach Wayne Lance said. The Seahawks (4-2) are ranked No. 1 among the state’s Division II private schools.
“We’ve been fortunate to start playing consistently and taking care of the football a little better,” Lance said. “Blocking, tackling, executing and kids buying into the details.”
Also key has been the return of quarterback Josh Healey.
A transfer from Greenbrier Christian, Healey missed both of the Seahawks’ losses because of a shoulder injury. Healey rushed for 215 yards and two TDs in his first start and last week against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy accounted for four touchdowns and kicked a 29-yard field goal and five extra points.
“He’s done really well,” Lance said. “It’s been a gradual process of getting him back in the flow.”
