Light rail in Suffolk?

Dwight Nixon, one of the seven mayoral candidates and a member of the city's Economic Development Authority board, mentioned light rail in response to a question on transportation in last Thursday's candidate forum.

"We even need to look at light rail," he said.

Norfolk is set to open the region's first stretch of light rail in 2010. That 7.4 mile line to the Virginia Beach border is estimated to cost $232 million, paid for by local, state and federal money.

Linda Johnson questioned Nixon's light rail talk during her answer.

"I think we need to get real here," she said. "The economy today is in a crisis, so the bottom line is, where's the money coming from?"
