NORFOLK
Ahmed Lee's morning bus was packed Wednesday. Students who didn't normally go to school were showing up, he said. Some of his classmates had rushed out to buy Barack Obama shirts for the occasion. And rumor had it that a student who had dropped out of school last year showed up at the office that morning to re-enroll.
The Democratic presidential candidate and senator from Illinois was at Granby High School on Wednesday, visiting a freshman honors world history class, speaking in the school library about his education plans and sending many of the high school's students into a flurry of excitement.
In his second day of speeches focusing on education, Obama hit many of the same points he made during a speech in Ohio on Tuesday, saying he wanted to double funding for charter schools, move toward a system of merit pay for teachers and boost the use of technology in classrooms.
He also took a swipe at the Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, for his latest TV commercial, which accuses of Obama of insulting the Republican vice presidential candidate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
On a campaign stop Tuesday, Obama used the phrase "lipstick on a pig," when discussing McCain's plans for changing Washington. The McCain campaign charged that the phrase was an insulting reference to Palin, who used this line in her convention speech: "You know, they say the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick."
Obama said it is time to stop the "lies and phony outrage" and focus on "serious debate about where we want to take our nation."
During his classroom visit, students asked Obama what he wanted to be when he was in high school. An architect, he said, once he realized he wasn't going to make the NBA.
When one student wondered what advice he had for students who want to get where he is today, he told her he wasn't sure that is such a good ambition.
"I'm not sure I'd advise everybody to run for president," he said. "I've been sleeping out of hotel rooms for two years now, and I miss my kids."
He went on to tell students to set high expectations for themselves, to learn to work with people who are different than them and to find work that excites them.
As he was leaving the classroom, several students turned around so Obama could sign the backs of their shirts.
During his speech, Obama said McCain hasn't made education a priority and doesn't understand its importance in determining whether America will be successful in the future.
"If we want to out-compete the world tomorrow, we're going to have to out-teach the world today," he said.
Politicians on both sides of the aisle should move past old arguments and realize that both parties have good ideas about improving education, Obama said before
detailing his support for ideas typically embraced by conservatives, such as school choice - through charter schools, not voucher programs - and accountability for teachers.
Struggling teachers should be given support so they can succeed, Obama said. But if they're given that support and they're still not successful, they should be removed from the classroom, he said, prompting applause.
Admission to the speech was invitation-only. The audience consisted of parents, teachers, students and local officials. Most of the invitations were given out by the school division, a campaign aide said.
Sophomore Tiffani Gardner, who had been invited to attend the speech, said she was disappointed that she wasn't given a chance to ask the questions she had prepared.
"There were students in here, and we should have gotten a chance," she said.
Still, she said, the talk had only increased her support for the candidate - even though she can't vote.
"He hit all the points," she said. "He's just given himself a big boost."

How about telling us why
You support McCain/Palin.
Don't forget this Chris33
McCain actually has an observable and undebatable record of what he promises. Not what you all tout:
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/15/records-show-mccain-more-bipartisan/
No more McBush
When McCain came back from Vietnam, he cheated repeatedly on his crippled wife, and then divorced her to marry Cindy Hensley. In the 1980's McCain lobbied for Charles Keating, the saving and loan felon who stole billions in pension money, and took numerous jet set vacations at Keating's expense. In the 1990's McCain had an affair with a lobbyist that so scared his staff, that they told her to stay away from him. His campaigns for the Senate were all financed with his wife Cindy's mob money. In 1994 Cindy McCain forged prescriptions in the names of her employees and stole drugs from her own charity. McCain's campaign this year is getting huge amounts of oil company money. His pick for vice president is under an ethics investigation and will probably be indicted on Oct 31st. McCain is 72 years old, has had cancer 5 times and is on 5 different medications. He is so out of it, that his staff will no long
Gertz point,
I understand how you're feeling. Ira insisted I played the race card in my posts concerning the Frederick case. I didn't mention race or ethnicity, in any posts on that subject or the 1 on the 17 yr girl. He, through his inane reasoning, insists I did. He's so sure of something that not there. You seem to be getting the same treatment, from two persons.
Anyone
who actually researches Obama's work in Chicago, his personal life, & listened, to his speeches & debates, would know that Obama does insist on personal responsibility, for everyone. Persons not aware of this truth are either uninformed, due to misinformation, from right-wing pundits, or lack of access to what Obama has actually done & said. Obama is no more a socialist than 'W' is a fascist. 1 may have legitimate,(for themselves), reasons to not want Obama as President. Yet they must be truths, not misunderstandings, or based on outright lies, by his enemies on the far right.
excuse me, but
"Go ahead and play the "it's for the children" card or the racial "you are afraid to vote for a black man" card"
I have NEVER played either card. Vote for whomever you want to that's your choice, but name calling won't get you anywhere no matter how hard you try.
Gertz...
I prefer to back a frog with hemorrhoids for president than a blatant socialist. I am in no way fooled by democratic liberal socialist drivel. Go ahead and play the "it's for the children" card or the racial "you are afraid to vote for a black man" card. Personal responsibility and responsibility for those that YOU bring into the world must become the law of the land. No more government theft from those that work to achieve in order to pay for those that live off of our achievement. Sound tough? Good!!!
Noise
Empty wagons make the most noise. Empty minds use insults, & rants, orally or in written form, as debate. Nothing is available to create words conveying a valid opinion. Some of us, need to lighten up. This isn't a knife fight. It's sharing of opinions, as civilly as possible. Anyone finding himself, incapable of disagreeing with someone else, without resorting to rabid insults, should count to 1000, or take a walk, something, before writing a post.
Dare you
Cut and paste your post where you showed us your reasoning.
RE: the truth
"When the Obomites are confronted w/ facts the do not reply and simply post repeatedly. Not a single one of them has an idea of what Obama is about. Being for or against something does not qualify you to be president."
That simplyu isn't true Ira, I've posted my comments on why I'm voting for Obama, but I haven't read any reason you are supporting McCain/Palin. All you want to do is blast people for not agreeing with YOU.
This is a quote from a former Ira comment: "Why not quit w/ the two line posts that offer no information. We already know who you support. If he is so great show us the money. Maybe you will change some minds."
Maybe you can practice what you preach.
The truth
"LOL...People are crazy! Come on a "hockey mom"? lmao What does that have to do with running the country? Nothing I might add, but bye the way VP's do nothing at all but attend funerals and occassionally speak to the press."
It will be difficult to qualify Obama's fitness for office if this is your take on Palin. I guess the tie breaking Senate vote the VP has escaped your attention?
I challenge all NEW posters to review these threads. You will see the same few poster posting the same empty statements over and over. When the Obomites are confronted w/ facts the do not reply and simply post repeatedly. Not a single one of them has an idea of what Obama is about. Being for or against something does not qualify you to be president.

"Let's bring our troops home from Iraq" (and by the way as soon as they are back send them off to Afghanistan!) Obama's plan to pull troops out of Iraq will not save the government any money since he fully plans to redeploy those same troops to Afghanistan."
That's exactly where our troops should have been sent in the first place and not to Iraq. Hussain had nothing to do with 911, and that has been proven over and over. Even Bush now plans to send more troops to Afghanistan. Bin Laden still remains free to roam the earth, while Bush has spent billions bombing the heck out of Iraq and will spend billions more top rebuild that same country. Money that our country desperately needs. Therefore, you comment makes little to no sense!
Obama's plan for the military
Obama says a lot of what is the "flavor of the month". Let's bring our troops home from Iraq" and by the way as soon as they are back send them off to Afghanistan!) Obama's plan to pull troops out of Iraq will not save the government any money since he fully plans to redeploy those same troops to Afghanistan. Let's not kid ourselves on this point.
Well Chris...
"Every other Western democracy has universal healthcare except the United States, and they pay HALF per capita what we pay for healthcare, and they cover everyone. Why? Because a single payer system has inherent cost savings."
The universal system in Canada forces patients to wait over 6 months for a routine pap smear.

Canada remains the only industrialized country that outlaws privately financed purchases of core medical services. PM Stephen Harper and other politicians remain reluctant to openly propose sweeping changes even though costs for the national & provincial governments are exploding & some cancer patients are waiting months for diagnostic tests & treatment.
CS
No worries, I saw that too, and started thinking maybe it was wishful thinking on my part. Don't know why they have it listed that way.
CB, I hope you were not referring to me in your post. Not only did I not "stall", I provided factual evidence for my posts. There was no name calling, no silly misspelling of names, no wild charges, just a rebuttal to a post that I disagreed with backed up with facts. In response to my original post, CS was right to ask for facts; he doesn't know me, and I would do the same. Please note that the person my original post rebutted never responded...And if my replies were tardy, it was because like you and everyone else here, I have other things going on.
my bad
govtrack.us, the site I generally use to track legislation, said that the bill never came to a vote and said that "This bill never became law." Evidently it was wrong, as was I.
Um,
Think you may want to go back and do a little bit more research. It was passed on January 11, 2007. And what was that about the Coburn / Obama bill? I see you did not mention it. Again, for the record, I noted two pieces of legislation, where the poster said zero. You may dispute whether they are major, or the level of involvement, but that's your issue, not mine. Finally, I would think it somewhat obvious that if two Senator's names were on a bill, that would indicate some sort of involvement weighted over many others whose names were not.
RE:typical
Again the constant name calling, but why can't you tell us why you support McCain instead of just putting Obama down. Let's hear it!
glad to
I can't prove a negative, i.e. that Obama was the not the author of a particular bill, namely the first one you mentioned. You brought it up so the burden of proof is on you.
"I would like you to provide me with facts to prove your assertion that Obama was not integral to ... passage of these bills." S2566 never even came to a vote. This means that it did not pass.
Okay
The bills I noted are actually referred to as Coburn / Obama and Lugar / Obama. They are not referred to as so and so and 47 other senators for a reason. Now, I would like you to provide me with facts to prove your assertion that Obama was not integral to the authorship, sponsorship and / or passage of these bills.
So,
I suppose, Palin's 2yrs as governor of a state with less residents & a smaller operations budget than many American cities & her 6 yrs as mayor of a town with less residents than my childhood neighborhood, qualifies her to be the "Leader of the Free World". This is a person who just got a passport. This is a person, being protected by her handlers, from the press being able to ask any questions. Tonight, after weeks of coaching, they will allow her to answer questions from a hand picked interviewer, on ABC. She may or may not do well. The point is, no one, unless an incumbent, has experience as President of the USA. They all have to do, OJT. Besides, having experience doesn't always mean something good. Take an honest, fair, open minded look at the last 4yrs of 'W.'
Typical...
It is typical that someone like cs asks a legitimate question and only gets stalls and questions to a question from the liberal crowd. The answers are all too obvious. NObama hasn't been a Senator long enough to do anything of importance, period. He has done nothing, nada, zippo. The only thing he has done is sing the change song and get liberals all excited. I believe the infomercials use the same tactic and hook many a sucker.
RE: facts indeed
How about you providing some substantial reason why anyone should vote for McCain instead of putting Obama down. Lets hear some of your so called facts for a change.
Nearly
every worthwhile bill in the Senate & House, has multiple sponsors, regardless if it started with 1 or 2 persons or not. It's called "jumping on the bandwagon." Everybody wants to look good to the American public.
Facts indeed
I said "meaningful piece of legislation for which Senator Obama was the principal sponsor or for which he is primarily responsible for having passed."
S2590 had 47 cosponsors - that's almost half the Senate. Not exactly Senator Obama's baby, now was it? S2566 had 26 cosponsors - again, hardly Senator Obama's bill. But if he wants to take ownership of it he's more than welcome - this bill never even came to a vote.
I ask again, what meaningful piece of legislation for which Senator Obama was the principal sponsor or for which he is primarily responsible for having passed. In other words, to what law can you point and say, "Obama wrote that" or "without his diligence it wouldn't have passed?" You can't because he wasn't in the Senate long enough.
Facts.
The bills I referred to in my post were S2590, with Coburn, and S2566, with Lugar. There are more, but you can look them up for yourself; they are easily found. See, I do not make baseless charges or parrot nonsense I hear on the radio. The post I responded to stated there was zero legislation, right in the subject line. That charge took literally only seconds to rebut. I don't know whether the poster knew it was false or just did not care enough to look, but if you are leveling such a charge, maybe you should check your facts first. Now that I have complied with your request for facts, I would ask you, in the true spirit of bipartisanship, to also repudiate the post which claimed there had been zero legislation, since it was obviously false.
Obama's good judgement
Republicans want to make Obama the issue because they have no issues of their own.
Obama's priorities are getting out of Iraq, universal healthcare, and American energy independence. These happen to be the three greatest priorities for America right now.
Getting out of Iraq will save us $200 billion dollars a year and bring our brave troops home to their families. American troops should not be sent in harm's way unless their is a COMPELLING NATIONAL INTEREST. Which was not the case with Iraq.
Every other Western democracy has universal healthcare except the United States, and they pay HALF per capita what we pay for healthcare, and they cover everyone. Why? Because a single payer system has inherent cost savings.
America's dependence on foreign oil is the most important security issue America faces. Clean energy technology is already available and only requires the political will to develop it.
Making these three issues his top priorities shows the wisdom and judgement that Obama has.
Gertz It sounded
It sounds like the student didn't read question that was supplied to her.
LISTEN TO IT.A simple question.A confused politician.Why am I running?He doesn't even know!
facts, please
Perhaps you'd like to name one meaningful piece of legislation for which Senator Obama was the principal sponsor or for which he is primarily responsible for having passed? I realize the two years he spent in the Senate before declaring his candidacy for President were especially constructive, but I cannot think of any.
Zero legislation?
If I were you I would do a cursory check of the facts prior to floating this current talking point / myth . Or if you are feeling really inspired to get to the bottom of this issue, you might write to Senators Lugar and Coburn ( republicans both, by the way), and see whether they happen to agree with your claim.
