Old Dominion University officials will hold town hall meetings today on safety after several robberies and an attempted sexual assault near campus.

The meetings will be held at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Webb University Center Board of Visitors room, according to an alert sent yesterday to students. Other meetings will be held in the dorms.

The meetings were planned after the attempted assault, a shooting and a robbery of several students Tuesday night. The crimes happened in the area of Killam Avenue and 48th and 49th streets.

University officials also warned students via alert message during the weekend about robberies in the area.

Norfolk police have not released any information about the incidents, but according to the department's Web site, 46 crimes have been reported in the area from 44th to 51st streets near Killam and Colley avenues since June 27. The reports included two robberies of individuals, two simple assaults, two burglaries and dozens of property crimes.

ODU Nickel and dimes the students

My daughter attends ODU (she is putting herself through college) and cannot afford the parking fee so she parks God knows where. I would think ODU could offer reduced fees for students with low incomes? I thought there was campus security that will walk students to their cars? As a matter of fact, didn't the same thing happen at ODU a couple of years ago? Shame on ODU.

Allow students to carry

Allow students to carry firearms on campus and instruct them to shoot the next person that pulls a gun on them.

ODU at Fault

Killam Avenue has always been a high crime area. It was 30 years ago and is worse now. Why didn't ODU officials notify these students about the high-crime areas?
