Overturned lantern sparks house fire near Elizabeth City

Posted to: News North Carolina

A home on Campground Road in northern Pasquotank County was destroyed by a fire that started after a kerosene lantern fell over, said Barry Overman, fire marshal for the Elizabeth City Fire Department.

The fire ignited at about 8:45 a.m. and fully engulfed the home before being extinguished by 10 a.m., he said. No one was injured.

The homeowner warned firefighters early on about ammunition stored in the house, but the fire was extinguished without further incident.

Campground Road is several miles north of Elizabeth City in a rural area of the county.
