Unleash your inner rock star by participating in the Guitar Hero III Tournament and help make a wish come true for a local child.
The Guitar Hero III Tournament, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Greenbrier Mall, 1401 Greenbrier Parkway South, features the popular music video game. The event, which takes place in center court, is open to all ages and will also feature carnival games, air brush tattoos and a silent auction.
Greenbrier Mall is owned and managed by CBL and Associates Properties, Inc., the sponsor for the tournament run by Fun Services, a Pittsburgh, Pa.-based company.
"There are 10 malls throughout the region holding the event, but Greenbrier Mall is the only one in Hampton Roads," said Stephanie Rice, marketing director.
A $10 entry fee is required to play in the tournament and proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Virginia. The average wish costs $6,000 in the Hampton Roads area.
Joan Steele, director of development for Make-A-Wish, said wishes are provided to children ages 2-1/2 to 18 with life-threatening medical conditions.
Four-year-old Grace Ogle of Chesapeake recently had her wish granted to visit Disney World.
In Guitar Hero III, players use a guitar-shaped controller to simulate music by playing to scrolling notes on a screen. Points are tallied electronically based on performance.
T op scorers, in the easy, medium and expert levels, move on to the elimination round until the top three winners in each category are named.
The three champions will win an electric guitar and a $150 mall gift card. Each participant, or individuals who make a $10 donation to Make-A-Wish, receives a goody bag with items and mall coupons - and the knowledge that they've helped to grant a child's wish.
