Rep. Drake criticizes Obama for 'lipstick on a pig' remark

Posted to: House Elections News Presidential Election

U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake, in her role as part of a Republican group created to counter criticisms of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, has lashed out at Sen. Barack Obama for a comment he made Tuesday about putting “lipstick on a pig.”

Drake is one of the 19 national members of the “Palin Truth Squad,” a group made up of Republican women, the majority whom are members of Congress.

“Rather than delivering on his promise of hope and change, Barack Obama sunk to a new low with his remarks today regarding Gov. Sarah Palin,” Drake said in a statement released late Tuesday night by the campaign of Sen. John McCain.

Obama’s comment at a campaign stop Tuesday in Lebanon, Va., appeared to be an attack on rival Sen. John McCain, not Palin.

Obama said, “John McCain says he’s about change, too. Except – and so I guess his whole angle is, 'Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl Rove-style politics. We’re really gonna shake things up in Washington.’ That’s not change. That’s just calling some – the same thing, something different. You can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink. After eight years, we’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

Palin used her own lipstick line in speech at the Republican National Convention when she said, “You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”

The McCain campaign charged that Obama’s remark was a reference to that.

Drake’s response concluded: “It’s hard for Barack Obama to paint himself as the agent of change if he harbors the same mindset that Sarah Palin, and millions of women just like her, have been fighting against their whole lives.”

re:lipstick on a pig

My last post was supposed to state about Joe Biden's acceptance speech
'sitting around the dinner table wandering about'.......

lipstick on a pig

I see that some of the writers know that McCain used the phrase 'lipstick on a pig' while talking about Hillary Clinton a few months. He said it first concerning her proposal on Universal Health Care Plan that he was against. How could he forget that, and be so upset with Obama. He is senile...plus, he took Joe Biden's acceptance speech about "families sitting at the diner table wandering how will they pay for the house, education...etc'. He is stealing speeches...a 'CHANGE'. Never heard it from him until now. You have to Google on everything and you will find any information that you need, then you won't have to speculate. He was not talking about Palin, and McCain knew this...He is just showing out for Palin. She had better Google Mr. Maverick...and Cindy had better watch him.

I sent messages to Hannity, O'Reilly, Dobbs, and a few more who were talking. No one wants to acknowledge that McCain said it first, and he is supposed to be sooooo very upset about this.....WOW!

palin on abc

Palins' interview on ABC last night, showed the world this woman is full of words, that have no substance at all. Babbling, does not a VP make, and at times she didn't even know what she was talking about. Charles Gibson, had to ask her several times to answer a question instead of being bombarded with "WORDS". Very sad!

Palin truth squad please do your job

Palin still touts her "thanks but no thanks" about the famous bridge to Gravina, and that has been well established as an outright lie. She campaigned for it while running for governor in 2006 and when the outcry stateside got too hot, she nixed the bridge (that she promised to the residents, by the way), but the money stayed in Alaska. Could she at least admit the truth, say she changed her mind? Apparently not. Many of her other issues are political positions, but this continuous use of a fabrication to bolster her credentials is a character issue. She is either clueless or shameless, but either way, she is not trustworthy enough for VP. I hope these are not the values she is passing on to her children.

speaking of lipstick

what's that shade Thelma wears?

Concerned Voter!

Thank you for your concern that I might be stupid and waste my vote. I have weighed the issues and do not have your concerns about the way my conscience is directing me to vote. But thanks for having my best interests at heart (I will assume . . .). Cheers, MGM

Irrefutable proof that Thelma still has...

... no backbone. Truly sad. Do the GOOPers withhold campaign funds for Thelma if she doesnt play the puppet for the puppeteers, or does she voluteer to be led by the nose of her own volition?

Addie

Ditto!

Rove is playing the fiddle, again . . .

and those who aren't paying attention dance to the tune. The continuous slime machine is working just fine in 08, folks. They did this to John McCain and he lost against Bush. If you think McCain is so great, doesn't it bother you that he's using Rove in his campaign? Doesn't it make you question the lies about Obama? How is it possible for the same percentage of our voting population to be so stupid in every election? (I'm addressing the stupid people here) Don't you get it? Aren't you angry about being manipulated by these guys? Do you think they do this because they care about you? Winning means only one thing to these people -- MONEY. They get to keep their grubby hands in your wallet. How can you not be angry about being manipulated by lies? Do you really think you are choosing who to vote for?

George

Allen should have known the meaning of the word. His mother grew up in the area in which this word is used for just the insult it was taken to be. Yet I agree that words have been taken out of context, throughtout history, especially during political campaigns. Yes, seemingly innocent words, taken out of context, can & have ruined careers, in many fields. Too often, however, people do say improper things, knowingly,(not realizing an open mic is nearby), thinking they won't be caught.

Avoid the issues

McCain's campaign Manager, Rick Davis stated, "This election is not about issues, this election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

From an exchange between Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough (on Joe's show) regarding the inanity of this discussion when real issues are being ignored:

MATTHEWS: Two days from now -- I want to ask you, what will we talk about two days from now?
SCARBOROUGH: Whatever the McCain campaign wants us to talk about, because the McCain campaign is assertive.

One word

macaca

Ask George Allen how one thing (maybe taken out of context) can ruin your political career.

To Mary...

I don't know about your in-laws or the poster to whom you were referring, but I personally have been ribbed in three differebnt countries this year specifically about our storm in a teacup political outrage!

In years gone by I was given major "curry" in British pubs over the Lewinski thing...not that it happened...the way the US reacted to it.

Seriously....we need to focus on issues and ignore the fake outrage. I care about having leadership that will secure our economic wellbeing and keep our borders secure. "Political correctness", alleged "family values" and popularity contests won't give us either of those.

To all

so easily led to feel Obama's "lipstick on a pig", comment was a sexist insult of Sarah Palin; I've got prime oceanfront property for sale, at only $25.00 an acre! 100 acre minimum. It's located in the Badlands of the Dakotas. Send your certified checks to me & I will send you the deeds. Thank you in advance, for your gullibility.

NO MORE YEARS! NO MORE YEARS!

Eight years of McBush is enough. $700 billion dollars borrowed from the Chinese to pay for the invasion of Iraq. Insanity.... Throw the bums out!

Legislating is hard work

Fortunately Thelma Drake has a GED and a real estate license. So I guess she's well qualified, by Republican Party standards.

Mary

How could anyone possibly think we are the laughing stock of the world? We, the people of the United States have been discussing the most critical national crisis in our history! - 'lipstick on a pig' - How dare the world think we are idiots!!

Distraction by Republicans

Mrs. Drake should not have commented on the lipstick story. Use your status as a congresswoman for more news of substance. John McCain said the same about Hillary and has repeated it 5 other times. It is simply a metaphor. Can we please hear about issues and not all these smoke screens. I am so disappointed in the Republican party. Don't join in on the charade.

YES, LET'S TALK ISSUES

I don't care if the candidates are women, or half-minority, or freaking transsexual aliens. However, Pilot Online commentors (sp?), I beg you all to check your punctuation and capital letters BEFORE you hit send. Otherwise, I read your comments and can't take you seriously.

By the way, I was VERY feminist (I didn't want kids or even a husband) and attended a women's college. Then 8 years later I had a child and put my IDENTITY/career on hold. I eventually read a book called "Happy Housewives" because I was so confused. Now I know who I am. I'm a woman and am confident in my status in the world, mom or no mom, career or no career ... Get over the lipstick joke. Thank God our candidates (from both parties) can have real (i.e. FLAWED) lives and can make jokes.

Please look at the issues. There are too many issues for TWO parties to handle. (Heck, I'd vote Green or Libertarian if the presidential candidate

Distraction

Politically designed to distract the voters from focusing on the issues, Drake's just being a good republican team player. She didn't complain when the same term was used by McCain referring to H. Clinton.

Let's stick to issues, like our huge debt, war, renewable energy, etc.

Shame Shame Shame on Barrack

The comment was a low blow and has caused me to review my support for Obama. There is no way around it, it was sexist and in poor taste. I question his judgment in going after the Repub VP nominee, why not go after McCain? Let's quit apologizing for Barrack, he is a politician and has now proven he can get down and dirty. I would reconsider my support if he sincerely apologizes to Ms. Palin. I ask the question, if Obama has said this about Hillary (my first choice) do you think it would have caused a storm? You Betcha! Ms Clinton needs to re-enter the race as a third party!

Let's say ignorant and intellectually dishonest

about Drake. Would that make it better? Obviously either Drake does not have a strong grasp of the English language or she is being intellectually dishonest. Or worse, she believes that we are stupid enough to believe her that Obama's comment was sexist. It should be obvious that republicans are grasping at straws with this "issue", and their motives should be questioned. And for those who believe that it was a swipe at Palin, look up the word context. And then reread the quote in question.

Grumpy

Where have you traveled recently to find we are the laughing stock of the world? My British in-laws aren't reporting anything of the sort. Cheers, MGM

Nasty

"Drake is dumb and dishonest. LOL "

So tell us a bit about your education and career. There was no need to outright insult someone.

For the record, I do not support Drake. Never have. Never would. Her partisanship however is equal to comments like the one above. Petty and unneeded. Ask yourself, what did that help?

Headlines: N.Korea still building nukes, Ike displacing

1 million lives, Afghan strategy not working “cannot kill our way to victory”, economy in the dumper and all that the powers that be can do is wank about lipstick?!

This country is the laughing stock of the world...I'm very ashamed of what our society has become and holds important, lipstick, WOW?

We are the most egomaniacal, self righteous homo sapians walking this earth.

As usual, I'm writing this to myself cause they're afraid to print an honest gut wrenching opinion!

If the shoe fits!

For Pete's sake somebody please buy Thelma some lipstick!

As I

wrote in an earlier post; any one thinking Obama was referring to Palin is guilty of projecting their own inner nastiness. I've heard that saying hundreds, if not thousands, of times in my lifetime. 98% of those times, I knew the comment wasn't about any person. It was used about circumstances & situations. The few times I took it as an implied insult toward a person, are when it was made perfectly clear by the user, that he intended it as a personal insult of someone. It's getting to that time; true feeling & beliefs, will dictate the choice people make in November. How many people, will walk into that booth, fully feeling they will vote 1 way yet vote differently?

Onesided mind

Im sure if your mother or your daughter was referred to in that matter (lipstick/pig) you would have a problem. Obama needs to zip it, reference is reference (hockey mom/lipstick)- his mother was three months pregnant before marrying his father.
He sould be ashamed of himself. I flew to hear him speak in a couple towns/states - I was moved what he stood for - and I heard him as he spoke; being a bit wishy washy with his speech on "change." I even caught a few little under-voiced "colored" ("how about that, a black man in the White House, ha ha ha")("Washington would like that, now wouldn't they")comments from him as he walked by and shook hands with us, but he was only making those comments/so called jokes to African American folks - I dont care what color you are buddy, just do me and the future of my child good, make us proud we voted for you. Now, I'm a bit tired of it all, the inspiration is gone - and to t

Drake Go Away

Drake is dumb and dishonest. LOL Maybe Obama was thinking of her!

This is "change'?

So McCain now says he is the agent of change. The only change I can see is George W. Bush has passed the "King of Slime" crown to John McCain!!
