A six-year-old boy was killed in a car wreck in North Carolina Friday afternoon after the car his grandmother was driving hydroplaned and struck an oncoming truck.
Ryan Benfield, of Edenton, was riding with his grandmother, Inez Chappell, on N.C. 32 in Chowan County when their 2007 Toyota Corolla hydroplaned and slid over the center of the two-lane highway, said North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper K.R. Briggs on Sunday.
The car collided with a pickup truck traveling north, killing Ryan, Briggs said. Chappell, 62, was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. with serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup was treated and released.
