CHESAPEAKE

A rash of second-half mistakes turned a potenial blowout for No. 9 Indian River into a 21-13 cliff-hanging victory over No. 10 King’s Fork Friday night.

The host Braves (1-1,1-0) bolted to a 21-0 lead in the Southeastern District opener for both teams, but lost two other touchdowns on a fumble in the end zone and a blocking violation that erased a 67-yard score by Dravon Poittilo.

“We didn’t maximize our opportunities and left too many points on the field,” Indian River coach Cadillac Harris said after watching his troops amass 117 penalty yards and lose two fumbles.

“Franklin Hamrock is still learning the quarterback position. At times he looked good, but other times he showed he still has much to learn. He’s surrounded by some veterans, who we hope will help him through the rough spots.”

Hamrock’s counterpart for King’s Fork, Laray Kindred, rallied the Bulldogs (1-1,0-1) to a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Blitzing defensive back Antonio Brown turned in the play of the game, sacking Kindred for an 11-yard loss on a first down at the Indian River 32 with 2:25 left.

The sack stripped momentum from the Bulldogs, who turned the ball over on downs three plays later at the host's 43.

\ The victors held A.J. Harper, who piled up 175 yards in last week’s win over Norview, to 44 yards. Harper was minus the normal help he has in the backfield as Joel Coleman and Dominque Patterson didn’t dress due to injuries.

Van Dyke Jones fueled Indian River’s quick start. He took a pitchout 31 yards around right end to score on the Braves first play from scrimmage.

The tailback/defensive back followed that effort with a blocked punt that set up the victors’ second score, a 3-yard run by Joshua Sneed.

Hamrock passed for 107 yards and a touchdown in his second career start. Kindred total 61 yards passing, including a 29- yard scoring toss to Michael Mason.

“King’s Fork kept after us,” Harris said. “We’re going to have to play twice as well next week against Oscar Smith. ...
