After Hickory threatened to score on its opening drive, Oscar Smith bounced back and trounced the host Hawks in a Southeastern District game.

On its first drive — which featured passes of 43 and 35 yards — Hickory (0-2, 0-2) drove to the Smith 3 only to have Roderick Benn intercept a Danny Grauer pass to end the threat.

Tim Smith scored three touchdowns for the Tigers; Perry Jones ran for two, including one from 46 yards out; and Phillip Sims threw two TD passes.

Oscar Smith (2-0, 1-0) didn’t give up any points for the second consecutive week. Hickory finished with minus-45 yards rushing and total total offensive yards.

Key stats: OS–Phillip Sims 11-16-0 135 2 TDs passing; Perry Jones 5-56 2 TDs rushing; Tim Smith 4-55 2 TDs receiving and TD on punt return.

He said it: “We were able to do what we were supposed to do. There was just a lot of messed up coverage, but we came back and played our responsibility” – Smith talking about bad defense on Hickory’s opening drive.
