Star Wars, you've been sweded

Posted to: HamptonRoads.com Spotlight

"Star Wars," you've been "sweded".

So has "Finding Nemo," "Tron," "Karate Kid," "The Shining" and a host of other movies.

What is this "sweded" we speak of?

Well, the term was used in the 2008 comedy "Be Kind Rewind" starring Jack Black, Mos Def, Mia Farrow, Danny Glover and Melonie Diaz. To make a goofy story short, Black, who is concerned for his health, is magnetized while trying to sabotage a power plant. He subsequently visits his friend, who works at a video story.

Black's magnetized body - you guessed it - demagnetizes all of the store's VHS tapes.

What follows is Black's attempts to "swede" or remake all of the films for the store's customers. (Black tells customers the films are Swedish versions of popular movies and charges a higher fee.)

And thus, another YouTube phenomena was born.

Now, would-be Spielbergs are remaking their favorite films without the $50 million budgets and posting them on YouTube.com.

Brian says he would love to see the films locals can swede and - assuming they are family friendly and violate no laws - he will post them at HamptonRoads.TV. You can upload your video here.
