PORTSMOUTH

Starbucks opened in the downtown Portsmouth area today.

The standalone shop is located at 361 Effingham Street at the corner of North Street.

Portsmouth’s economic development director, Steven Lynch, said a grand opening will likely take place next month.

I doubt there will be a

I doubt there will be a conflict between the Daily Grind and the new Starbucks. The Starbucks has a drive through and is located directly outside the gates of the Naval Medical Center. It will go gangbusters on traffic coming in and out of the gates and the close-by businesses. Daily Grind has more of a neighborhood coffee shop feel and is further down High Street. I will continue to patronize both (I will just be staying in P-Town for Starbucks vs going to Chesapeake or Farm Fresh now) based on what it is that I am doing.

As another poster stated, let's quit with the negativity...this is a win for Portsmouth...and those who don't like Starbucks' coffee certainly aren't being forced to go there.

Portsmouth has been saved

The economic developer probably makes 100 grand a year and he got us a fast food joint with a few workers making minimum wage. I wonder if my real estate assessment will go down 32% now that Portsmouth has hit the jackpot.

Black or White

I wonder if this Starbucks is the Black one or White one. Article didn't say but maybe Ms. Lucas or the Mayor can clarify?

Ooops!

Sorry, I meant "Daily Grind" not "Great Grinder in my comment.
But, the subs at "Greater Grinder are the best in the area. Even better than Subway!

What's in a name?

The Economic Director of Portsmouth is not interested in the small business person. He likes to pay attention to the "Big Names" which will hopefully bring in "Big Bucks" to Portsmouth's City Budget.
"Starbucks" may bring in revenues after the opening. But the parent company of Starbucks is closing stores on the Pennisula and throughout the nation.
"Great Grinder" has been in Portsmouth for a number of years and will remain long after the newest of "Starbucks" wears off!

But don't forget . . .

The Daily Grind is a great Portsmouth place and they remember your name and your story (like Cheers) there. Cheers, MGM

Actually from what I

Actually from what I understand its near the Naval Hospital so it will probably bring in pretty good business.

Starbucks

That is good news for Portsmouth in general and Olde Towne residents in particular. I live all the way in Churchland but I will go downtown to support it. Let's support our new businesses in Portsmouth and stop being negative. People are always complaining about there not being enough commercial services in Portsmouth. Well we have one and its a major brand. Grow up!

Well, I can't wait to spend

Well, I can't wait to spend my money there...especially since I saved so much money on my waterfront property taxes!

Starbucks

Yay , now you can pay more for a cup of coffee than a gallon of gas in Portsmouth , yahoo , can't wait (NOT) .

Interesting. .

Perhaps I can buy one of those commercial cappuccino makers in a few months when this place goes out of business. Sure this isn't a Starbucks Lite??

It's a Portsmouth thing. :

It's a Portsmouth thing. : -) You have to live in a city that has been fighting tooth and nail to bring retail back to truly appreciate the signficance of Starbucks deciding that our demographics warrant one of their stores. It's our first, other than the one in the Farm Fresh at Victory Crossing. Now..if we can just make sure no one robs it... : -)

Major Headline?

Wow. Slow news day.
