TiVo to Debut on the Desktop
TiVo may soon be coming to a PC near you. On October 15, the set-top box TV recorder will be available on your computer for $200. The system will come with a TV tuner and a one-year subscription to the TiVo service.
News reports state that the software/hardware combo will have an interface just like the current TV version.
An advantage of the PC version that TiVo is currently touting is its availability in countries where traditional TiVo service is not available.
Many versions of Windows Vista and some versions of Windows XP already have the software necessary to perform functions similar to what TiVo is offering. However, the user does have to provide a third-part TV tuner for them to work. TiVo says that their system’s familiarity will help them overcome this hurdle.
TiVo's new offering will not work on Macs. However, similar hardware and software exists for OS X users. Elgato is a manufacturer of both hardware and software necessary for watching television on a Mac.
