Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and former Gov. George Allen don't agree on who should be the nation's next president, but they did reach a consensus this morning on one thing: It' s important to look sharp when you're appearing on national TV.
Kaine and Allen, who appeared live this morning on the "Today" television show, straightened each other's ties before the cameras rolled and the verbal sparring began, program host Matt Lauer joked.
The show was broadcast live this morning from Colonial Williamsburg. The two men were interviewed together by Lauer.
Kaine told Lauer that Virginia is a battleground state and could be swayed to vote for Sen. Barack Obama in November because Virginians don't like what's happening with the economy or the current administration's policies on national security.
He also cited residents' willingness to elect two Democratic governors in a row.
"I think they like what they see with Democratic leadership and they say let's do it at the national level," Kaine said.
Allen disagreed, saying that McCain's promise of lower taxes and his stance on national security and energy security should help him win Virginia, which typically has voted for Republican presidents.
The two men did agree that race probably won't be much of an issue at the polls in a state that elected Douglas Wilder as the nation's first black governor in 1989.
"Today" stopped in Virginia as part of the show's tour of battleground states that also includes Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan.

"And remember John McCain is not the one who surrounded himself with financial advisors"
McCain surrounded himself with lobbyist. Who do you think would run the country if he was elected, but wait.......he won't be elected.
No mas
How much Constitution shredding, geneva convention breaking, DOJ politicizing, science muffling, CIA agent outing, Afghanistan ignoring, warrantless wiretapping, retroactive immunity seeking, FISA breaking, signing statement writing, intel juicing, Supreme Court rebuking, hurricane ignoring, rubber-stamping behavior can you people eat before you have to push away from the table?
SWD2K - WHO NEEDS SOCIALISM? WE HAVE FASCISM!
I do not agree with the definition of fascism you describe, but agree the country has moved closer to a fascist government, which will not change after this regime change, laws in place and will not easily change.
This economic situation occurred due to large corporate business; take your pick of interest groups, lobbyist with the support of the Republican Congress and Administration reducing and\or eliminating regulation (i.e. ENRON effect).
As far as "Big Gov’t", the Republican Party has "outsourced" to the point of not knowing how many contractors work for the government as well as the tax code in favor of business.
Side note: I never bought into Hampton Roads, which reflects the Republican Party, created by business, for business, at tax payer expense! Non elected people wanting to increase taxes to pay for: roads
I cater to no party; I’ve voted Republican, Democrat, Independent
SWD2K - WHO NEEDS SOCIALISM? WE HAVE FASCISM!
Socialism is government control of corporations. Fascism is corporate control of the government. Socialism redistributes wealth from the rich to everyone else. In fascism, private interests raid the public treasury, such as what's been occurring.
In essence, fascism is the result of free market capitalism run amuck, and socialism is a reaction to the inequities caused by capitalism. In unfettered capitalism, corporations end up controlling the government through a scheme of deregulation and privatization. What we are seeing today: a government with weak regulatory powers that can’t stand up to corporate greed. Yet, our government is simultaneously and systematically abrogating the rights of the people at every turn. We are on the precipice of something quite dangerous. Which direction will our government go? You decide, and you better hope you're right.
Don't speak for me
Hey kaine,
Don't speak for me.. 2 Dems in a row has done VA great 2 Billion in debt THANKS FOR NOTHING
Before you vote
JUST REMEMBER: Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, Lewis Farrakhan and Tony Rizco. Now there's a bunch to be proud to know and have a long association with. Real great Americans, ones that have influenced and molded the anointed one, Obama. And remember John McCain is not the one who surrounded himself with financial advisors such as: Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson, both of them are waist to neck deep in the mortgage debacle. Additionally, Palin is really the only one in the race that has had any real executive experience.
Nobody is ready for a Democratic president
Like others have said, just wait. If you put Obama in the Oval Office, expect Socialism in this country at a level NEVER seen before. Big government will take on a new meaning as bureaucracies swell to manage social program after social program after social program. Tax breaks for the poor and elderly??? They don't pay squat in taxes now, and an additional $500/year isn't going to make a rat's behind worth of difference. What will matter is the brakes put on investment in new businesses as investors (business owners and those thinking of starting a business) pull back because they'll have to pay MORE taxes!
We will also see socialized medicine (likely), redistribution of wealth from those that actually do work, stifled investment in new businesses (which cuts jobs), continued outsourcing of jobs (the reason they're in China now is because businesses are taxed to the hilt now - they need the tax breaks to stay afloat), and the list goes on.
What part of Socialism do the Nobamas NOT understand??? It is bad for EVERYONE, not just the "rich" or the well-to-do. It is bad for all of us! Penalizing corporations and wealthy individuals is stupid!!!!!!!!!
Gov. Kaine Remarks
Tell him to speak for himself - I think the headlines today with budget item cuts and the 2 million dollar budget gap (mistake or whatever its called - lack of management) tells you what he is all about - and Obama is only a duplicate of all of this - if elected - you think we have problems now - It only gets worse with lack of experience added to the big picture - whenever he is asked about the bail-out situation or other problems existing in our worled whether it be about the war of whatever he comes up with these cute little remarks instead of real solutions -expect more of this -when the harder times come!
Um...hello?
Exactly which country have all you anti-Obama posters been living in these past 8 years? Because the one I'm living in can't withstand another moronic Republican administration.
Keep those heads buried, sheeple.
voters for Obama
The people who will vote for obama [see Dawn's post -- great post Dawn!]
are the ones we should all worry about. With the early voting how many do you think the Dems will bus to the polls in October just to get that vote registered?? There's a huge push for Obama and his socialist agenda. Amazes me how many people want the government to take care of their every need. Where oh where will I move when this happens?
No way!
The majority of Virginians are much too ignorant to want a democrat in the white house. Eight years of rove/cheney/bush just wasn't enough!
We need a "maverick" like mccain telling us "the fundamentals of our economy are strong"!
Ummmm....No!
The only Virginians who want Obama as President are those who want the government to continue to hold their hands and give them everything on a silver platter.
Go ahead....elect Obama and see just how bad this country becomes. All I have to say is I hope none of you are going to need any kind of emergency or serious surgery. Because after Obama's health plan goes into effect you just might die waiting for it.
This Virginian is not!
But, I do agree, there are probably a lot who do. I figure anyone who is having it rough and wants the gov't to make life easier for them is planning on voting democratic. It's all about what the gov't can give you these days. Just go to Walmart. When you see the lethargic employees, the packs of people who walk horizontally down an aisle and won't move to let one person by, the guys with the pants hanging under their rear, the people buying M&Ms with food stamps, do you have to wonder who they're going to vote for (if they vote at all)?
Kaine does not speak for this Virginian!
Since Virginia is going to have a $2.9 billion shortfall, maybe he should be in Richmond working on that instead of on the Today Show OR stumping for Obama.
McCain will win Virginia!
Since when is Tim Kaine the authority on what Virginia wants? He has done absolutely nothing since becoming governor. Come November, I would bet the farm that McCain is going to win Virginia and the national election to become our 44th president!
onlky time will tell
Remember he wanted to give illegal Immigrants in state tuition and benefits of the state for free that is why he is not the4 V/P candidate not that looser Bidden
In other news, Dunken Donuts
In other news, Dunken Donuts announced on the Today Show that doughnuts are delicious.
Uhhhhh....he is a Democrat,
Uhhhhh....he is a Democrat, does anyone expect him to say any less? How is this news?
Oh, and for the record, he is wrong.
LOL!
Kaine.....delusional as usual.
NO, we are not!
'nuff said
Laughable
Well, it's again apparent that kaine still does not have any idea what Virginians want. I didn't vote for him, and he does not speak for me. I have felt too much pain with kaine/warner as tax-em-to-death governors. It's about time we get fiscal responsibility in Richmond and kaine just can't do it. Look at the mess he has us in after the largest tax increase in history by the previous democrat governor. It's time for change. Maybe the GOP doesn't have the best plan, but it has to be better than the pain kaine has us in now.
Kaine tells Lauer Virginians ready for Democratic president
But we sure as hell are ready to get rid of our ineffective Democratic governor!
Politics
The same can be said about Governor Palin and Senator McCain and yes, Senator Obama too. If you are concerned about your tax dollars supporting an elected official running for, or supporting a candidates running for office, TRY and get a law passed stating they can only do so on weekends and holidays’, or return their salary to the Treasury. I am sure you will have support from both major parties...
Forget VA timmy you be a TV star now
I hope he tells the morning liberal TV crew he's for change too...
Lately, Kaine has spent more
Lately, Kaine has spent more time campaigning and working for Obama than on Virginia's business. No Bama-No Kaine. He should be in Richmond working for VA., not Obama. If he is not going to give Virginian's 100% of his time, for which he was elected, then he should resign.
Maybe he should pass the hat to the TV crowd. Kaine is looking for a future job with Obama.
