Golf

Two-time defending individual champion Brinson Paolini fired an even-par 72 Wednesday for a one-shot lead over freshman Alex Lloyd of Kellam after the first round of the Beach District golf tournament at Red Wing.

Lloyd’s teammates, Wade Wawner and Ryan Kilmon, followed with scores of 74 and 76, respectively .

Regular-season champion Kellam

totaled 301 and goes into today’s final round with a nine-stroke lead over Cox, the two-time defending state champion. The Knights have already qualified for the Eastern Region tournament.

Cox is followed by First Colonial and Princess Anne at 324. Kempsville is at 328 and Green Run is at 331. The next two best teams advance to the region tourney.
