Staff and wire report
THE HBO MINISERIES "John Adams" was nominated for 23 awards and already has won eight technical awards.
The seven-part mini-series was filmed in the Colonial Williamsburg and Richmond areas in spring 2007. The production, which premiered in Richmond, spent $80 million in the state and employed about 3,400 Virginians as crew members and extras.
Look for it to add prizes Sunday for best miniseries and several other prizes in these miniseries categories: directing (Tom Hooper), writing, best actor (Paul Giamatti as president No. 2) and best supporting actor (Tom Wilkinson as Ben Franklin). Also nominated in that last category were David Morse as George Washington and Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson.
Laura Linney as Abigail Adams will probably win for best supporting actress in a miniseries or movie, but she faces strong competition from Judi Dench of "Cranford" and Phylicia Rashad of "A Raisin in the Sun."
Virginia Beach production sound mixer Jay Meagher was part of the team that won an Emmy for sound editing for a miniseries or movie, one of the eight technical awards.
Ultimately, "John Adams" seems likely to surpass the record for most Emmys for a miniseries, which is 11, won by the series "Angels in America" four years ago and by the movie "Eleanor and Franklin" in 1976.
