The College of William and Mary is keeping its interim president for a longer term.

The Board of Visitors on Friday voted to appoint Taylor Reveley to a three-year term. Reveley, dean of William and Mary's law school, took the interim position in mid-February after the sudden resignation of Gene Nichol.

Rector Michael Powell said in an e-mail that the board decided to drop the interim designation after "careful consideration and with the benefit of input from the faculty, students and alumni."

Nichol resigned February 12 after learning the Board of Visitors didn't plan to renew his contract after a series of controversies, including the removal of a cross from a college chapel. The board's decision was met by protests by many students, faculty and staff members.
