If members of the national media were hoping for hate when they blew into Virginia Beach on Monday, they left disappointed.
The McCain-Palin stop at the Virginia Beach Convention Center was a packed pep rally peopled for the most part by kids playing hooky, workers who called in sick or ducked out for a couple of hours and scores of retired military.
Not a loudmouthed lout in sight.
Perhaps you've noticed the annoying herd mentality that dominates political news coverage. It works this way: Day in and day out, the networks, cable news outfits and talking heads all focus on identical issues. Flip the channels and listen in as panelists on CNN, MSNBC and Fox all tackle the same topic.
It's televised tedium.
Last week's over-arching message was that McCain's supporters were stupid, spiteful and out of control, based on the ugly televised behavior of a few.
It made for lively discussions and - best of all - played to popular stereotypes.
Yet Monday morning in the r esort c ity, there was none of that.
Looks like the national political posse will have to find something new to chew to death this week.
Were there boos?
Of course there were. It isn't a political rally without them.
Were there chants of "Nobama?"
Yep. Again, echoing a clever play on words that signals the crowd doesn't want the other guy to win is one of the reasons people go to these things.
The biggest insult to Barack Obama came from the stage when McCain compared Obama's economic plans to Herbert Hoover's.
Ouch. It got an ovation, but the deafening din was reserved for the GOP candidates themselves. Especially Sarah Palin.
I'm guessing that in a few days my right ear will stop ringing. For now, it reverberates with calls for Sar-ah! Sar-ah! Sar-ah!
Don't blame Elizabeth Hedlund. She simply couldn't help herself. Standing on the seat of a folding chair - next to mine - she was trying mightily to catch a glimpse of Sarah and Todd Palin as they worked the mosh pit on their way out of the hall.
The closer Palin came, the more excited Hedlund became.
"Sarah, Sarah!" she yelled, holding her camera in one hand and waving excitedly with the other.
"Oh, put down that sign," Hedlund sighed, as another supporter - one closer to Palin - blocked her view just as she was about to press the shutter.
"She's my kind of woman," the Kempsville resident told me before resuming her calls for the vice presidential candidate to look her way. "Sarah, over here! Todd, Todd, Todd!"
Alas, the Palins were swallowed in a sea of supporters. They never looked up into the bleachers.
Both candidates stuck around after the speeches, heading in opposite directions to sign autographs, shake hands and make the Secret Service nervous.
Rob Ealy, 21, a member of the Army Reserves and a student at Bluefield State College in West Virginia, is home on fall break. He and his younger sister, Carole, worked their way to Palin. Carole, 17, a senior at Kellam High School, collected an autograph.
Ealy got something else. When he called out to tell Palin he was heading to Iraq in February, the candidate stopped signing autographs. To blow him a kiss.
Hate wasn't in the house. Not on Monday in Virginia Beach.

McSame Failin Rally
How about the fact that the McCain campaign is bloating its crowd numbers. If everyone set on someone's lap could barely get that many in. Compared with the turnout for Obama in Norfolk last night. According to the Fire Marshall and city 22,000 people showed up, The lines were a mile long I'm told, And no one carved An M in their cheek. But some Skinheads got arrested for plotting to kill a school full of Black Children and Then go for Obama.... Just because Va Beach didn't act like complete idiots doesn't mean that their campaign isn't trying to Incite these feelings. In MY mind Obama has done more to try to unite us while McCain just wants to lash out at the Democrats, the liberals, the socialist, the Media, Even the President he supported over 90% of the time. This country has been divided for the past 8 yrs, can't we Elect someone who will truly be CHANGE?
P.S. Someone below mentioned that you normally write with a liberal view, when was this? Inquiring minds want to know.
This is a column, not a news
This is a column, not a news piece. She is supposed to give her impression of the events. I believe this is what she saw, albeit through rose tinted sunglasses. She is the pilot's right wing columnist. Nobody who is paying attention should be surprised by her positive spin. She likely thinks "kill the traitor" makes a good campaign slogan
You're a journalist?
The fact that some McCain/Palin supporters reacted aggressively toward Obama supporters is to be expected. The "Obama Bin Lyin" sign in the crowd isn't that shocking given the recent tone in the McCain campaign. But your inability to report the facts even while you attend an event first hand is shocking. Other reporters at the event witnessed and wrote about some of the hostility before and during the event.
You say, "Not a loudmouthed lout in sight."
I say, "Not a hint of journalism or intelligence in sight"
apparenty mccain didn't learn
from all those ever so nice GOP folks that attended his rally (according to Kerry. He was still the same hotheaded fool last night that he's always been.
I have it!
Why not just call the McCain supporters racists for not supporting your candidates?
Don't expect much.
GOP Behavior
Kerry must not read the Pilot she works for. how about an Obama supporter sitting on a beach verbally assaulted. Then Wednesdays edition tells of people being spit on, etc. So what paper do you read Kerry>>>>>>
The Cyber Stalker
I like it. Not truthful, but I like it. If you guys do not want to be addressed directly, then do not address others.
So your not going to answer the question? Apparently you are not really against abortion. In fact you are more than for it by supporting Obama. You actually not only want to take the choice away from women about their bodies, but oddly want to remove a parents abiltiy to protect their own children of child bearing age. To demonstrate this you support a ticket that not only supports choice which are against, but have actually co-sponsored a bill removing parents from the equation.
What an odd view.
Keith
Don't feel bad, you're not the only one. I think dude must be some kind of cyber stalker but he/she definitly has way too much time on their hands... it's interesting how the Pilot gives two different articles with polar opposite perspectives at the same venue. Were the crowds outside really that different from the crowds within? It seems people truly just see and hear what they want.
Props to Kerry
for writing the truth. Kerry is the only reason many people read the VP.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK KERRY!!!!
"seek out these posts", ira says
You actually sought me out on this forum to talk of things not even mentioned in this article or by me about this article. You seem to be following me quite closely. You might want to hold your breath until you back off --- I might have eaten some cabbage and hard boiled eggs recently.
keith
I am only addressing you as the other three who seek out these posts are beyond redemption. You do understand that Obama is actually on a bill aloowing minors to have abortions without their parents consent? I persoanlly am pro-choice but not for minor children. You do understand the effect this will have on your anti-abortion views?
Quite a crowd, eh?
It must have been mighty crowded for Kerry. The Palin/McCain campaign estimated that there were 25,000 people in that venue that only holds 16,000. We should soon be seeing a column by Kerry about VB allowing unsafe crowd conditions and endangering the GOP faithful.
Re: Prariedog
"Republicans are always polite and more subdued...the democrats are the loud-mouth jerks who do not allow anyone else to say their piece."
Prariedog, obviously you've never heard of rush limbaugh.
AW!
That's so niceeeeee! The GOP beach attendee's were on their best behavior. Well, golly gee! Maybe McCain and Palin could learn a thing or two because they sure as heck haven't been "nice" in their campaign mud slinging.
sick of it
I'm so sick of the nasty, mud-slinging, personal, hateful comments coming from the voters in this election. It was refreshing to read something positive about yesterday's rally. I was there, as well, standing about 75 yards from the stage, and didn't hear hateful things spewed from anyone during the rally. I also only saw a handful of protestors (Obama fans) outside (although the Pilot would have you think that there were more than 20 people protesting), and I didn't hear anything hateful from the Republicans outside either. While I know you generally write from the liberal slant, Kerry, thanks for writing the truth this time.
Actually...
Ms Dougherty must have been observing different parts of the crowd than the ones I saw. On entering the building I saw someone's nice homemade "Terrorist for Obama" sign propped just outside the door. During the rally, some kids with an Obama sign were inside watching. They left early, and as they walked out, a very Republican-looking guy wearing his McCain Red turned and gave some invective to their backs. After the rally I was getting coffee a couple blocks away, and two gents in Rally Red were in line in front of me. The fatter one was warning the other guy that if "that idiot, that black socialist" gets into office, "he'll wreck this country."
It might not have been as dramatic as shouts from the crowd calling for harm to the Arab Obama, but I felt like I got my dose of moronic GOP ultra-vehemence for the day.
"The other guy"
"the crowd doesn't want the other guy to win is one of the reasons people go to these things."
Geez, Kerry, sinking to Senator McCain's level does not become you at all. This is reminiscent of the senators "that one" remark in the last debate. I can only imagine what the outcry would be if Senator Obama used rhetoric like that...
McCain Crowd
Republicans are always polite and more subdued...the democrats are the loud-mouth jerks who do not allow anyone else to say their piece. The democrats just talk over them and no one can understand what's being said. Elect Hussein Obams and this is what you can look forward to in the future...if there is a future for the United States of America with him as persident!
Finally, a McCain/Palin rally that is NOT a hatefest
That IS news. Although.... Malcom's story on the crowd outside had a few gems... "No halfbreeds", "Obama supports the killing of babies!", "Communist!". Sounds hateful.
And when Todd's Alaska succession plan is inacted if Sarah and her running mate win, the price of king crag legs is gunna go crazy.
Ack! Ack!
Whew! I spit out Kerry's McCain-Palin flavored Koolaid just in time!
A Kiss?
Wow, how generous of her to blow him a kiss! Maybe she could send him something a little more useful, like a strategy or adequate body armor.
